With two full albums written (lyrically, at least) I am officially out of material. The second album was just a bunch of stuff left over from what was originally Horizons before I turned it into a rock opera, plus Evermore. After Horizons was finished I vowed never to write a rock opera again, because it was such a draining process. I can't believe I actually thought I wouldn't want to do another one.
This time, however, I have nothing to work with. I have to build everything from the ground up; everything is brand new. It's both exciting and daunting. I want to take the best from both albums. Horizons was more alternative prog while Snow Globes (tentative second album title...I'm so original) has more of a crunchy, raw rock sound. So this time I want the complexity and instrumentation of Horizons with the edginess and energy of Snow Globes. And I want to experiment with song structure.
So I present my new musical endeavor, tentatively called "Second Star to the Right And Straight on Till Morning." And, since I have to come up with titles before anything else, here's a tentative track listing:
1. The Story of the Prisoner in a Distant Land (Instrumental)
2. City Lights
3. The Departure
4. Gunpowder and Fireworks
5. Flight of Orion
6. The Pursuit
7. Across the Divide
8. Homeward Bound
9. The Return (Instrumental)
10. Second Star to the Right
11. And Straight on Till Morning
And, to top it all off, here's the first set of lyrics I've cranked out:
City Lights
Gazing out from this empty room
I can see the city lights
Shining bright like the fireflies
Illuminate the night
Sitting here in this foreign place
A captive all alone
Imprisoned on this solemn hill
Light years from my home
I watch the stars and I search for home
Out there in the night like a candle burning bright
I clutch the bars around my window
Out there I can see that everybody’s free
Where do I go from here?
I have to break these chains and find my way
I can see the path is clear
I have to live to fight another day
How many years have I spent in here
As a prisoner of war?
Knowing I could never reach those lights
I guess that’s what hope is for
I watch the stars and I search for home
Out there in the night like a candle burning bright
I clutch the bars around my window
Out there I can see that everybody’s free
Like an eagle flying out of the night
I’ll spread my wings and soar
Reaching out to embrace the light
I guess that’s what hope is for
Where do I go from here?
I have to break these chains and find my way
I can see the path is clear
I have to live to fight another day
Like an eagle flying out of the night
I’ll spread my wings and soar
Reaching out to the city lights
I guess that’s what hope is for
I guess that’s what hope is for
