I was getting frustrated at all the bugs/problems I've been finding/having lately, so I've started working on a new project. This game is based off an old classic, and is based all around addictive fun. I can't give you any more details than that, but I'm planning on using this game for the Pavilion's third contest. It should also take a lot less time to develop than Vanished Nights; hopefully no more than a few months.

so is vanished nights on hold, or is it scrapped completely?

Oh, no, I'm not planning on scrapping Vanished Nights at this point after all I've put into it so far. I'm just putting it on hold while I complete another game. I'd like to get a finished game out there, and this new project I have in mind would be the perfect game to do so while also serving as an entry in the pavilion's contest (which I've always wanted to enter). I still want to finish Vanished Nights, but the more I progress, the more I forget how I did certain things. And that means that when I find bugs, it gets increasingly difficult to fix them. I fear I may have made things too complex, trying to make it as polished as possible. So although the future of Vanished Nights is unclear, let me say one thing. I still would very much like to complete it. And I would consider it a crying shame if it never sees the light of day.

Me four, but your new project sounds interesting, too. I'm kind of in the same boat you are, so I know how you feel in wanting to put a completed game out there.

but your new project sounds interesting, too. Yeah, this new project is no slouch either. Just because its development cycle is a lot shorter doesn't mean this game won't be just as fun as Vanished Nights would be. I'll reveal one new bit of information on the new project. Its gameplay and graphics are 2D (except cutscenes, which may be done in 3D). There, how's that to wet your old-school appetite?

I wasn't saying I wasn't interested in your project. I was just saying that I'd still like to see Vanished Nights get finished (I still want to know why you're on trial).
Your new project sounds interesting, as well. I like the idea of old-school 2D graphics and how the cutscenes may be done in 3D. I don't know if there's a game like that out there, but it be very interesting to see.

I haven't even mentioned the genre its in. And that's the way it'll probably stay until it's finished, as I want it to be somewhat of a surprise when it's ready for release.

I know how ya feel about the bug fixing Jugem. I make things so complex in my games, I spend more time fixing bugs then actually completing something, and m in most cases, I just give up and rewrite entire scripts. Can't wait to see this new project.

Man, I hear you. I just spent the whole day debugging my waitress mini game but it feels so good to see it running (almost) bug free. This is the part of the process I love.

You actually love the debugging stage? I mean, it's fun when after dozens of hours, you finally find out you left out a semicolon at the end of a line that seemed unrelated to the bug you were trying to locate (something I think I recall from an introductory programming course years ago). But that process itself is not something that seems possible to love. Especially in RPGM2, where you can't trace the code line by line very easily to try to see what's going wrong. Anyway, things should flow a lot more smoothly with my new project. I've now got the basic "gameplay" going, so things are looking good so far.

The only part of the debugging process I like is when the game is working with 0 bugs. Because then, I can move on.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The part I love is when everything actually works, especially when there are several times when you are afraid it will be impossible to do. It is a time to be proud of your achevement and bask in the glory of what you have accomplished.

I agree. I think after much tedious scripting and you finally make it all work out, you get a great feeling of accomplishment.

yeah. i hated debugging so much, that when i used to program, i actually had someone else do all my debugging!

yeah. i hated debugging so much, that when i used to program, i actually had someone else do all my debugging! Haha, that must be nice. Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that development on this new project has proceeded very well, and no serious issues (meaning any that I couldn't work around) have come up so far. And I've almost finished the core of the gameplay system. And what's left should be simple enough to do (compared to what I've already done anyway). The bad news is that things have come up once again. I'm now looking for a place to live with someone else, so I really don't know where that leaves me and RPGM2. But I don't think I'll have much time for this anymore. If worse comes to worse, I'll send what I've already done to Doan, and he can either post it up as an example of what can be done 2D-wise, or maybe even finish it himself (or give it to someone else to finish it). And if the latter happens, I'll obviously reveal the details of what I had in mind for it, and give a rundown of the scripts needed to understand it. But that shouldn't be too difficult, since I've already done the dirty work. Obviously, only time will tell what will happen, so I'll see how things go.

I'm interested in seeing how you pull off the 2d graphics.

Well, now that I've moved in and things have settled down a little, I'm finding time once again to continue working on this. So things are getting back on track. There's been one major bug that I found a couple weeks ago that I was just able to fix yesterday. And it was such a simple solution too...I just couldn't figure out where the problem was coming from before. Still have a little bit left to do with the core gameplay system, after which I'll be able to work on the fun/creative part of the game. I think you'll all have fun with this game once it's completed (I hope so anyway).

On a side note Ves, maybe my forum's name should be changed from "Vanished Nights" to "Jugem's Games" (for lack of a better name). Whenever you get a chance, that is.

Just a small update... I've now finished with the main gameplay mechanics, after just spending a few days bug-testing it. Still need to do more rigorous testing at a later point in time, but it seems to be working perfectly at the moment. Next up is work on the interface (which shouldn't take too long, as there's not much left to do there), after which point I can start to shape this into a game rather than the demo it is right now.

Boo! How's everyone doing? I obviously haven't been around in awhile. The last little while has been busy for me; graduating from university and moving once again. I still have plans on releasing this game (if it gets finished), or at least a demo. I've gotta get working on it though, and hopefully I won't have forgotten how this thing works.
