yeah, i'm taking a break from the Chronicle chronicles (but i'm still going to finish KC) to introduce my newest idea...Spirit Saga!
ok, i don't have much yet (not even char names or backgrounds) but the basic story goes like this:
-the world is inhabited by three humanoid beings: humans, elves, and demons -stories and tales discriminate against demons, saying that they're all evil -but it is not so, as only some demons are evil, just like there are evil humans and evil elves -in the past, the government has been plagued by evil demons ten times, and now an eleventh demon ruler has taken the throne (yes, he is evil) -dicrimination against demons is at an all-time high -on top of it all, the new ruler has used ancient powers to resurrect the past ten demons' spirits -these evil demon rulers are not evil (how many times am i gonna use this word?), they are just trying to create a peaceful world for all demonkind, but they are killing humans and elves in the process
-the main character (nameless at the moment) and his sister live with a single human parent. they're real parents died from an illness when they were very young. -after the two of them reached adolescence, they're foster parent was also taken by the same disease -forced to live on their own, they feared death almost every day -one night, a band of thieves struck the house and murdered the main character's sister -out for revenge, the main character found and slaughtered the entire band of thieves, giving him a very bad reputation among the townspeople -he was alone, everyone feared him...until the day when the mayor knocked on his door -"what do you want?" asked the mc -"i'm t-terribly sorry for disturbing you, b-but the hag ("hag" is her temporary name until i make a real one) outside of town has requested you" responded the mayor
-this is where you begin
-the main character walks to the hag's house and she explains that she wants him to undertake the task of defeating the king and the demons he's summoned -"why me?" -"all it took was your determination to avenge your sister, and the band of fifteen thieves lay dead at your feet. now, think of the people of the world, suffering at the mercy of the king. isn't that enough?"
-the hag gives him an object (that i must still make up) that will increase his power to an incredible amount -she tells him to return to town and stock up, and then head to "Unnamed Town" and gather information
-end of preview
so...in the second town, the game really starts. enemies appear once you leave the first town, and you begin the epic adventure it may be a bit cliched, but i dont care. there will be much more than killing the demons and then the king, as you learn about the characters and the enemies and their motives.
i don't want to give too much away, but (for those who are familiar) think of it as Tales of Symphonia meets InuYasha...k?
i'll post more as i come up with stuff.

oooooo!
i also plan on having a clock system (unlike the one in KC) and maybe a weather system...depends on options and difficulty.
maybe i could make a clock that works in real time (like animal crossing)?
and maybe i'll actually make original maps this time (for those who've suffered through GC who know what i mean)...

First, let me say, that while your idea has a hint of cliche-ism to it, it still sounds promising. I like the whole we're not evil, but some of the things we do are, kind of scenario.
Also RPG Maker 3 has an active time day/night system. You can see the the little HUD compass in the screen shots showing the passing of the day. Although, I've heard from the Pavilion that the changes in time of day are not dynamic like in RPG Maker 2 (i.e. you can't see it happen). Supposedly once the time change is meant to happen a screen change won't load till you enter a new map/town/dungeon/etc. Of course this is still unconfirmed, and I doubt that since they could do this with scripting in two, surely we'll still be able to do it in three.
None-the-less, epic, plot-twisty games are always welcome.

ok, from the second town, you go to a mountain range and kill one of the ten demons with the help of an elven archer from the second town. then you go into a new region. i plan on making the towns much larger than those in my two previous games, and having much more to interact with. hopefully i'll master cutscenes and stuff. oh well. i'll be thinking of ideas all during vacation in a few weeks, so hopefully i'll bring back some cool info. until then, keep waiting (for those who want to, anyway ) -the smurf

It sounds like a good start; it has a lot of potential for deeper messages . Did you ever get the newer GC up? (I've been looking forward to it)

well, i decided to name the character you meet in the second town Godfrey and have him be a comic relief:
MC - "So, you're name's Godfrey, huh?"
Godfrey - "Yeah, but you can call me God"
MC - "I've never heard of Godfrey as a name before"
Godfrey - "You can call me God, tho"
MC - "I ain't callin' you God, ok?"

What's really funny is that I had a friend named Godfrey in High School and he was the comic relief there as well. He never asked people to call him god, but he's said some pretty strange things.

kay, i dont wanna reveal a whole lot, but i decided Dreig (MC now has a name!!!), Godfrey and Helena are to be the main characters. i have some profiles already written, and i'll post when i complete them. nothing too specific, but...i also have the basic storyline. it's kinda cliched, but i hope to take it in an interesting direction. reading "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" gave me a few ideas, as did the recent InuYasha episodes concerning the "Band of 7"...let the creative juices flow! um...why does "creative juices" sound somewhat disgusting?

i've started writing the story of Spirit Saga on the computer (actually a different comp that doesn't have internet access, so i'll have to use a floppy) and hopefully i'll get the main jist of the story as i go. so far it uses a novel structure and i think i've written it rather well, but of course half of the dialogue that keeps the story moving won't happen in the real game, cause most of it happens while walking the fields.
but i ramble. what i wanna say is i'm starting the story, so at least i'm working on it. unfortunately with the RPGM3 delay i'll get a late start, but at least i have more time to plan.

okay, i got a question:
Should I begin making Spirit Saga on RPGM2 and make enough to release a demo?
a demo would definitely be all i'd make on 2, as the real game would be made on 3, but if i start it on 2 i can at least get a feel for the game and how it'd flow on 3, maybe. obviously the characters and town may differ a little, but the story would be the same.
so what do you guys think? should i make a "practice version" up to a certain point on 2, or should i just sit and wait? i'm cool with either, but...

I never make what I set out to make.
So much changes in the process of creation that I never plan out what I want in detail anymore.
I just let it happen.
So my advice is to make a mini effort of something you would not otherwise do and see what happens.
That's how Videogamedrome came to be. That, and the Pavilion's Group Project thingy.
Just a thought.
Peace.

So my advice is to make a mini effort of something you would not otherwise do and see what happens. um...how do you mean? -the smurf Well, have you ever heard of the Zen concept? Just doing without thinking. It is very hard to explain. I'll give an RPGM2 example. I recently just opened the VFX editor and started looking for things I never used. I picked the weight. After a little stretching and squishing and turning I had something that could pass for a button. So I saved it, copied, pasted, and made a ten frame animation of it being pressed and returning. Then I added the Doorbell sound (just because I always wanted to use that for something). I made some scripts to loop the effects and an event so I could give it a test press, and it worked. Then I decided it needed to do something. I made a gate and placed it on the test map I placed the button (the button was buried in a wall with only the top sticking out). So the script got bigger. It now opened a gate after ringing a doorbell. Naturally it needed something beyond the gate, so I, without really thinking about it wound up making a complex series of scripts for a puzzle involving popping colored balloons in sequence. I did not plan any of that. It was one of those moments where creativity took over and I was more of a vehicle for it as opposed to trying to drive it. That's a bit of mysticism, I know. But that's the way many artists create, and this is art. Zen is widely taught in Martial Arts because if you can learn to function without being inhibited by having to consciously plan each step, you are more "at one with blah blah blah..." and lots of other corny sounding, but meaningful things. There's even a book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Repair. This only works when you can get in the right mindset, but I come up with the weirdest and most amusing things like that. I'll shut up now. Peace.

got some juicy updates...
badguy = Onikuro
hag = Agatha
Agatha will be a very interesting character (hint hint wink wink) and she'll have a lot to do with both sides
Dreig Wilde will specialize in techniques and skills rather than magic and will be very much like Lloyd Irving in Tales and InuYasha in InuYasha, as in he's a cocky smart-ass who's a good person at heart, but refuses to show it.
Godfrey will be an archer and will specialize in magic having to do with the arrows (fire arrow, lighning arrow, holy arrow, etc) and will be a Zelos, Miroku based character, so he's a comic relief and a perv. he's also an atheist, as is Dreig.
Helena is a demon slayer and specializes in magical attacks. she has few sword skills, as well. she's a mix of Kagome and Sango from IY and Colette from ToS. so she's a little harsh but a lot serious and sympathetic, the normal female hero character.
there may be other side characters, but these are the main characters, and they all appear very early on, so you get plenty of time to get to know them.
i haven't put a lot of thought into Onikuro yet, as he hasn't come into the written story in person at the time. i've made two of the demon spirits also: Loche and Ryuko.
i've run into a bit of a pickle. if Onikuro can resurrect the spirits, what's the point of killing them? i have a solution in mind, but it may be difficult to accomplish in the 'maker. i'll see what i can do.
anyway, that's about all i've got right now (oh, and the # of thieves has been changed from 15 to 8). i felt i needed to update.

|
Post by The Smurf on Sept 15, 2005 14:51:42 GMT -5
well, um, update... lemme think...i'm sure i've come up with SOMETHING since the last update. well...there's a secret behind the gemstone that Dreig gets from Agatha (as if you couldn't have already guessed) and it comes in about halfway through. this information forces you to undertake a second "quest" to find an important character. problem is, the badguys are looking for him, too. good enough? that's the only new stuff i got. i plan to work on the writing some more this weekend. i can't remember where i left off. oh, and once i finish the story, i'll put it up on my site (or the site i hope to make for Chronicle Games, but that's another story), so that's something to look forward to. -the smurf

YEAH!!! WHO'S READY FOR A DEMO?!?!
well, not me...yet. almost got enough for a quick demo. I've created Dreig and Godfrey, I've done the towns of Azured and Blanche, i did Agatha's house and her event, and i made the Ruto Mountain Trail (1st dungeon) and its boss. i need to playtest and mess with the enemy encounters, tinker with some of the townsfolk, and then i think i'll be ready to put out a demo!!! YaY!!! don't expect one, but look for an update tomorrow.

Wow, that was fast.
I'm working on a quickie game for 3 but don't expect that kind of rapid progress.
I gotta use this time to get caught up on other people's games, your's included!
In fact I only have to mow my lawn today and the rest of the day is for playing (and eating) (and drinking) (and... well... maybe I'd better not say...).
Peace.

Post by The Smurf on Sept 24, 2005 7:00:54 GMT -5
yes, please don't say... anyway, the quickness just shows how easy the game is. a town can be built in seconds, as can a field. i use 4 storytellers so far. basically i'm demoing the very beginning, where you get your quest, meet the first party member and fight your first boss. i won't end the demo, rather, i'll let the player explore both fields (i had to make a second for the secret exit in my dungeon) and check out the towns at night. i'll probably put it up sometime today or tomorrow, but i'm hoping today. -the smurf

and today it is!!! go to fluffythebunny.com and then click on Random Extra Stuff and then RPG Maker Page. Go to Spirit Saga and download the demo. i've added some more storytellers, and the town of Cyanne (unpopulated). who will be my site's 300th visitor? so play it and gimme feedback, those of you special enough to have RPGM3!!! ;D edit: by the way, this has now been turned into a progress thread. -the smurf
