I have to say to start that these characters seem a little more 'forced'. The characterizations are good, but they don't seem as fluid as the others. I don't know how the problem can be fixed, so I guess I'll just shut up.

i see what you mean, ves. of course, character personality descriptions aren't the embodiment of the character, so i'm sure they'll develop themselves in-game. thanks for the comments, though.
i've updated the message feature to what i'm currently using, and added notes on the ability system.
enjoy.

new update...
i've uploaded a prototype screenshot showing the message system and some of the custom sprites (of course, credit will be given to the creators). the mapping and environment setting was all me.
i may have more screens coming, but i may not. i'm trying to write out as much of the game as i can before i actually make it, plus this week is going to be hellish with work, but afterwards i should be moving along at an acceptable pace...we'll see.
enjoy.

It looks pretty good to me, but I'm not familiar enough with RPGMXP to know what exactly is custom and what isn't.

well, all the sprites in that shot are custom made...and i have permission to use them, of course. the default message system is the one used in Seraphim, so by comparison...well...let's just say there's a huge difference. since the shot was taken the water autotile has been changed to a more rounded one.
i've also been working on the weapons, armors, shields, hemets, etc. i have 13 weapons of each weapon type (sword, spear, dagger, axe, mace, rod), twelve armors of each type (armor plate, cloak, helmet, hood, shield), as well as using the birthstone gemstones as accessories. each one can only be equipped by someone whose sign falls into the month of the stone.
i'm planning on doing alchemy/customization in this game, but i haven't gotten to that yet. also count on custom music, though currently i'm merely using tales of symphonia rips as placeholders. overall, a lot of things will be the same from Seraphim, but i do hope to use much more stuff than what Seraphim has. (of course, in the interest of style, Seraphim will remain without these new features in order to keep it different).
just a look at what i've been up to. enjoy.

Wow, this sounds really interesting. I hope that I will be able to play RPGMXP games using Wine in Linux...

I was just reviewing this topic, and I gotta say, that last image in the woods looks really nice! So, anymore screenshots/videos/demos we can be expecting soon?

well, i'm thinking of putting out a demo soon, but i need to get a little further into the game first. i have about fifteen or so minutes of gameplay right now, and there will probably be about five or so more minutes of gameplay before the demo. i also want to make a title screen, too.
so, to answer your question, a demo will be coming sometime soon, so keep a lookout for it.

Okay, here we go. the demo is completed and uploaded, with a title screen and about 20 minutes of gameplay. i have not edited the skill animations yet, so kinda ignore those. like with Seraphim, you'll need to download the RTP here if you do not own RPGMXP. otherwise, enjoy the demo. I tried downloading it, but it wouldn't work. I thought that since I had RTP for Seraphim that it might work, but it didn't (Seraphim didn't work either). Do these games only work on Window XP, because all I have is 98.
Sorry if this is a dumb, obvious question.

i posted a response in the other topic about the miniumum system requirements. i also tried downloading the game myself to make sure it wasn't a faulty link or anything, but it worked for me. i'm not sure what the problem might be. you can go here to see the details about the software...maybe it can tell you what's not working. -the smurf

well, i've composed my first custom tune for this game. for those who've played the demo (anyone?), it replaces the BGM for the town of Arcul. personally, i think it's the best piece i've made so far. so, without further ado: Arcul BGM ~ "Quiescent Sunrise"enjoy. -the smurf

I can't personally download it and play it at the moment because I no longer have a Windows computer. As far as others, I think there may be a problem with visibility: I'm not sure how many people read all of the forums and everything. Even for those who do, I'm sure a lot of them were like, "Hey, I want to check that out. I'll do it later," only to forget about it. When I get around to creating my own message board system, I will try to address these issues.

hey, wow... sorry.
i played your game, but i've moved since then, and things have been a bit hectic.
let's see... it was my first experience with xp, so i didn't really have anything to compare it to. it's been a few weeks, and i'm trying to go off memory.
i really liked the storyline, or what i got of it. to be honest, i was really surprised when it was over. i didn't have any idea how long of a demo it was, but it was an awesome stopping point. i liked the explanations with the grandma character of how the zodiac symbols play into the character's lives.
the only complaints i'd have is that there was one part where there didn't seem to be too much direction... seems like i was supposed to follow some people into the woods and i didn't see which way they went. the first town is awfully big, it seemed, and it seemed like i wandered around quite a bit before i found it. not a big deal, just the only even vaguely negative thing i remember.
sorry you haven't gotten more response to this; i had no idea my computer would be able to handle it, but it seemed to manage fairly well. it seems like xp might be limiting your audience, at least on this board... but i did want to get back to you and let you know i liked it.

I can think of a few possible reasons for the lack of quick responses: RPGMXP takes a long time to download (I dunno, I just noticed that, I have cable so it's no problem). What Doan said. You didn't make a new topic saying something like "New Demo!" ... Anywhoo, it certainly seems like the trouble downloading/loading was the big reason. My reason is that I've been absent for a while. As for the music, being a fellow composer believe me when I say I'd love to, but I don't have any speakers on my computer (this has been a problem for me before too). Sorry! I tried to playing it and ran into the same problem it seems some others did. I have Windows XP, and when I tried to open your game it would automatically close itself. Sorry, again... Your game sounds cool though!

hmm. i don't know what the problem is with the opening/closing of the game. occasionally that will happen to me, too, when i download other XP games from rmxp.org. maybe my next demo won't have such inconveniences...*crosses fingers* as for the making of a new topic for the demo, i guess that would be a good way to alert everyone of the update...it just seems like it would clutter my forum...but i guess that really doesn't matter. anyway, i've got some new tunes for anyone who can download them Journey of Faith - The "Overworld" music, though there's not too much Overworld in the game. River of Time - The music in the woods outside of town. This piece was inspired by Rush's "The Trees", mainly the woodblock piece. enjoy. -the smurf

Have you asked about this downloading/playing RPGMXP problem at the Pavilion? I know there are more XP users there - perhaps someone would know a solution to this and be able to get your demo fixed (I wanna play it!). And, I'll listen to the music as soon as I can (I'm gonna get a new computer of my own in my own room sometime, I just don't know when that'll be, but I'll have good speakers on it so I can compose music on it).

well, i just read through a tutorial on rmxp.org about game distribution, and i think it might have the answers to the problem. i'm going to be putting out a second demo sometime soon (maybe by the end of the month?), so i'll give it a try then.

Fear not, for this project is not lost in the sands of time. I have still been working on it, and hopefully I'll have new screens or something soon to compensate for my lack of updates. For anyone who's interested, here's an outline of what I've completed thus far:
-Beginning scene -Arcul and its beginning events -Hideout -Meeting scene -Redwood Mountains -Landover and its beginning events -Eulica Forest -Langstoon -Hargrave
I'm now working on Hargrave and its events. I've implemented the following features since my last update:
-Alchemy By using materials and old weapons, one can create unique, custom weapons that can affect characters' strengths against enemies.
-Blacksmithing Instead of buying a new weapon, why not reforge an old one into the one sitting in the shop for $1000?
-Horoscope Reading Nothing fancy about this, but you can visit soothsayers and have your horoscope read. I'll try to change them up every so often or something to create diversity.
-The Panpipe This item found in Eulica Forest is critical in solving puzzles. By summoning animals to help you, obstacles become overcome-able. Getting a bird to carry you across a river or a bat to hit a switch on a far-off ledge can be quite helpful, no?
I will also have a fishing system eventually, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
So there it is...FBOP is still going strong, and there will be visual updates coming soon.

Sounds awesome. And, it sounds like you've been making very good progress (several towns, cutscenes, and dungeons). Also, I like the idea of the animal-tool, reminds me of ToS where the magic ring changed in each dungeon and did something different. Very cool, Smurf, very cool! ;D

Okay, here we go. There are five new screens from FBOP. Work on the project is slow, but it is happening, and hopefully there will be more updates sometime. Meanwhile, here's the goods: Part of the Eulica Forest, where crossing the river might involve the help of some little woodland creatures...or something... Hmm...suspicious trees...could there be meaning behind the trees? Why are we here? </staple> The Bravest Face Blacksmith - the first blacksmith shop in the game. Enjoy. I honestly have no idea when I'm going to finish this, but I have every intention of doing so. Please standby... *enter weird "being put on hold for half an hour" music* -the smurf
