I preferto start by just the general idea, that is what I did to start this idea. I am now working on more of the setting, basically getting more to the point of the story, instead of haveing it left blunt like I started it...

I prefer to start with theme...
I, when teaching about writing, tell my students to ask this question:
Why does your audience need to read this story?

Well, I mean, I like to start the general idea, so I know what I am aiming for, making it easier to know the rest, you do it that way, and it is fine, I just like to do it like this.

I do it the same way Ves does, with theme and what will the audience learn from the story, and go over how to do it that way in my How to Make a Good Story Guide here: doansdomain.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=williamkirk&action=display&thread=1143929829I almost posted a bit earlier when Doshi posted this: "I'm thinking maybe starting with setting won't be right for you. Everyone has their own preferences when writing. So, I'd suggest trying to find your "writing style". Your style is the method in which you use to write. For instance, one person might feel best starting out with a character, but another would rather start with a plot." And was just going to add my two cents on why I would recommend not starting with a setting: Basically, when you go about writing your story, you don't want anything, such as a particular setting, to limit what you can do with the plot. In other words, to put it simply, would you rather make the setting first and have the plot adjust to fit to the setting, or would you rather make the plot first and have the setting adjust to fit the plot? Anyways, the big question here is: "I preferto start by just the general idea, that is what I did to start this idea. I am now working on more of the setting, basically getting more to the point of the story, instead of haveing it left blunt like I started it..." "Well, I mean, I like to start the general idea, so I know what I am aiming for, making it easier to know the rest, you do it that way, and it is fine, I just like to do it like this." What exactly do you mean by "general idea"? And if "There is this town, named Folicon, and it is in the middle of a volcanic region, surrounded by four very active volcanoes. And the only reason why the town is still standing, is because of it's famous monument, known to keep the volcanic ash and other debris from the area. But, the one in the central volcano, the volcano located in the middle and the most powerful of all, knows of this "obscenity" and wants to remove the town from this region. Four heroes, born and raised in the town of Folicon, shall rise and rid of this force. The only problem is, they do not know it yet." is this "general idea" and only took you 15 minutes to make, how do you expect it to develop into a deep and meaningful story? Don't get me wrong - I'm not telling nor trying to get you to give up on this story nor RPGM2, but rather I know what's best for you is to try KingSpoom's idea of sitting on a story for a while and to try some other story-writing techniques instead of (what it seems to me like) basing it off of some game, movie, book, etc. you just played, watched, read, etc.

Actually, Iam not thinking of quiting when I sat down, mindless for hours at school thinking of how to develop this, no way. Also, I got none of this from a book/movie/game or anything, only my head.
As for the artical, I shall read it, when I have the time.
'"There is this town, named Folicon, and it is in the middle of a volcanic region, surrounded by four very active volcanoes. And the only reason why the town is still standing, is because of it's famous monument, known to keep the volcanic ash and other debris from the area. And yes, that is my general idea, I like to start with this so I know where I am trying to aim for, I try to make things branch off of it as well, it is all in a little confusing loop I have of my own...
