Someone over at the RPGMaker Pavilion created a tactical battle system using RPG Maker 2. I though you'd all like to see the video. I'm quite impressed at how fast he was able to put this test system together (about three weeks). TBS Video

I must play this game!!! I knew it could be done from Vespuleth's efforts, but I didn't think it ever would be finished (sorry Vespuleth).
But nonetheless, I must play this game!!!

Unfortunately it's not playable yet and the guy who was working on it had to leave for a few weeks. He said he'd try to get a playable version finished before school starts in September, so hopefully we'll be able to play it in an other month or two.

I've been waiting to see something like this that would take on the battle system of a shining force / tactics style game.
Setting up an enemy AI is quite the programming challenge, especially one that works with any map. I was planing to make one too, but all of my other projects have just been too time consuming.
I figure everyone would have to be an event, and keep track of where everyone is, and you have to make branches that check if you successfully moved a space ahead to check for obstructions.
Im left to wonder how he did the red and blue grids. Probably vfx.
Anyone thinking about doing this should make sure they have a couple hundred variables to spare.

Hey DW thanks for posting the video for me, I should have done that.
Thanks for the comments guys, I have put a lot of effort into the TBS and I intend to finish it before I head back to college.
Couple of things,
Yes it does use a lot of variables, about 300 ATM.
Keeping track of where everyone is pretty simple actually, I just had to create separate XYZ and direction variables for every event and then after an action it simply runs through and refreshes them.
The grids are VFX, they are overlapping wave effects, the only thing that sucks is that you cant see it if there is a height difference.
and lastly, AI IS A BITCH TO PROGRAM AND DEBUG!!!
Just thought I'd let you know.
I should have a demo out by september but if not I will get it out ASAP.
Please stay tuned...

This video is very very nice if I do say so myself, and the fact you only did this in a few weeks is astounding. Might I suggest something though? Instead of using the wave ripple effect, why not use a 2D image? It looks a little more grid like, instead of water, nonetheless its good and just wanted to give you kudos for your work. edit: Sorta like so. There is also this way, instead of those outlines being white you can make it red and blue
