What do you do when the sun mysteriously disappears in the middle of the day, not to return for three months? What do you do when the only thing that permeates the eternal darkness is an equally mysterious light in the sky; one that brings both comfort and apprehension? What do you do when the appearance of dark, mysterious creatures scare the population away from ever leaving their homes? What do you do when you discover that this may be the predestined plague that will cause the end of the world?
What do you do then?
---
Just wait a little longer. Be patient, friends. Something's coming.

Something is getting a lot closer. I have a dungeon, a boss, a handful of side events, and walkthrough between me and a finished product. I can't freaking believe it. I haven't finished a game since Spirit Saga back in November of 2005. That's five years, folks. Sure, I've had demos. We've all had demos. I've had three demos for Spirit Saga II: The Yamikon Chronicle, I've had three demos for Freewill: Book of Prophecy, I've had a demo or two for Seraphim, but no finished products.
I must disclose the non-story details at this point, however. It is for RPG Maker 3, yes. It's a project I started probably 3 years ago or so, as a way to just fiddle around with RPGM3 to see what I could do. There was no real story, no real aim, just fiddling. Then I decided to come back to it a bit later, then some more, then a bit more, and finally I decided to formulate a solid storyline and wrap up the game. It worked, and it's pretty seamless. You'd never know that the first half of the game was being made up as it went. Except now you do know. After a certain point in the second region, however, I had the ending in mind all along.
Considering it's an RPGM3 game, it is pretty weak in the gameplay department. This is due both to the system's limitations and the fact that other people who care more about stretching and abusing RPGM3 have made much more impressive stuff. Here, I was more focused on story and actually finishing the game. That said, there are a few little features that inspire replay value.
I will do a walkthrough for the game and, in all likelihood, include it in the download file. It will be more than my previous guides - it will have item lists, enemy lists, character lists, abilities, and stuff like that, not just directions. That will be started fairly soon. I intend to finish the main story - the final dungeon and boss - either tonight or tomorrow, and the side stuff by the end of the week.
So that's it. And now I'll leave you with the title of the project: A Light in the Sky.
Make of that what you will. Later!

This sounds awesome! Its too bad that I don't have RPG Maker 3, though. It sounds like your putting a lot of effort into this game. Maybe if I get the chance, I'll see if I can find a copy of RPGM3 so I can check it out. It's feeling like old times again.

Maybe if I get the chance, I'll see if I can find a copy of RPGM3 so I can check it out. Yeah, I know RPGM3 is a tough choice, but it was something I started a long time ago and I wasn't about to start over on a more Domain-friendly maker. I'd love it if you could play the game, but definitely don't feel pressured to do so, especially if you have to buy RPGM3 - though I'm sure they're probably pretty cheap at this point. Dunno. Definitely glad to hear that you're interested, in any case! It's feeling like old times again. One can only hope! Good to see you around. As an announcement, I've finished the main story and am currently working on the side stuff, which is a little less than halfway finished as I type this. As soon as that's done I'll make a formal post here outlining the game details, and begin work on the walkthrough which will coincide with test playing the game. Then I should be able to upload once everything is 100% working. ;D -the smurf

Congratulations on finding the time and dedication to finish another game. Thanks! Sorry I haven't made any updates. There really is no excuse, though I did go all of last weekend without power due to a ridiculous storm here in southeast Pennsylvania. Anyway, the game's been done for a while, and I'm in the middle of doing a testplay and writing the walkthrough (two birds one stone kinda deal). However, the pace is a bit slow since there's a ton of stuff that I do during the day. I will say, though, that I certainly expect to be done by the end of summer, no question. I will probably be done by the end of July...I don't see any reason why that shouldn't happen. Then I'll have to remember how to use a Max Drive. So anyway, I promised a story-type post, so here goes: The sun sets in the middle of the day and is replaced by an ominous light in the sky. People wait for the sun to rise, but as the weeks go by it does not. Monsters begin to appear. Not just your regular "these are the RPG's versions of animals" kind of monsters. We're talking "these things will ing eat you alive" kinds of monsters. They're colloquially named the Chaos. So one day...or night, since no one can tell the friggin difference anymore...Lestor finds the balls to leave town and go investigate some rumored Chaos activity over at a local ruin. Rothgar learns of this and chases after him to give him a long lecture about how he shouldn't try to do heroic stuff. This is where you come in. The "main" character is Rothgar, even though Lestor is really the driving force behind the protagonists. As you'd expect, the game is about ridding the world of the Chaos. However, along the way, you get to learn who they are, why they're here, what they're trying to do, and a whole bunch of other sci-fi/fantasy stuff that makes everything all interesting. The game has a party selection system, albeit a very mild one, that allows for some replay value. There are six playable characters, but only four can fight in the party at a time. Therefore, at three different points in the game you can select who the fourth member of the fighting party will be (Rothgar, Lestor, and a character named Ariel are all constant members). Each character has advantages and disadvantages, and you can play through different parts of the game with different characters to vary the difficulty. Here they are: Chanticleer - Rito Aeris, which is fancyspeak for Birdman. He has the highest agility, the lowest strength, and average HP. He has the best multi-target magic but virtually no single-target magic, and no clerical skills. His best uses are against big enemy parties. Jacala - Komo Reptilus, fancyspeak for Lizardman. He has the lowest agility, the highest HP, and average strength. He has the best clerical magic, but virtually no single-target magic, and no multi-target magic. Overall he's very useful as a healer, and is probably the easiest character to win with. Akela - Lupo Canis, fancyspeak for Wolfman. He has the highest strength, average agility, and lowest HP. He has the best single-target magic, virtually no multi-target magic, and no clerical magic. His best uses are against boss enemies, making him very useful against the final boss and an optimal choice for the end of the game. The game also has a spot in one dungeon where there is a "Choose-a-Chest" where you get four switches that change the prize inside a treasure chest. You can only get one of the prizes - there are three prizes and a trap - and each prize will yield different skills for the party later on. Play the game three times to get all of them. Like I said, there's also extra stuff - the Academy is in need of new supplies, so if you can get five new supplies you'll get the best weapon in the game for Rothgar. However, in order to get each item, you have to do another side quest. So that's it. Like I said, I should have everything done by the end of the month at the latest. Any further questions, feel free to ask. -the smurf

Update time! I finished testing the game (good thing I did, lemme tell ya! I found fewer bugs in my basement) and writing the guide as well. So, either tomorrow or sometime this weekend I'll relearn how to use the Max Drive and try to get this thing released. I may even pop in over at the pavilion just to get it out there.
Almost there, guys!

Congrats Smurf! It must be a good feeling knowning you have created a full game. It feels very good, especially since I haven't completed a game in five years. There have been a lot of unfinished games in between. I appreciate the support. Just wanted to let you guys know, the game and the guide have been uploaded to my comcast storage. They are both bundled together as a winzip file. Here's the link: home.comcast.net/~smurf90/onlinestorage/a_light_in_the_sky.zipEnjoy! Any questions, feel free to ask. I'll probably stop by over at the pavilion a bit later to submit the game there, too. -the smurf

On a whim, I decided to play through the game again. Good thing I decided to see if I could break stuff, because I found a little bug in the system that you wouldn't find if you played by the rules. But by going into one of the caves early, you can actually zip ahead to an off-limits area near the beginning of the game.
The bugs have been fixed - ALL of them regarding this type of glitch, as apparently some other dungeons had the same problems. I'm going to finish my playthrough, just to see if there's anything else I missed, and then I'll go ahead and re-upload the fixed version of the game.
Oh, and in other news, A Light in the Sky is in Draygone's queue of Let's Plays, so hopefully sometime in the future we'll get to see a playthrough with commentary. Good thing I found these little glitches when I did, huh?
Updated version to come soon.

I've finished the playthrough and fixed all the typos and bugs/glitches I found. Nothing major, just stuff like accidentally making certain items unable to be discarded and not making the final boss immune to bad status - stuff like that. Anyway, all that is done. Now I just have to get it on the max drive and get the new updated version of the game and the guide zipped and re-uploaded. I'll do that tomorrow. Bed now.
