My game'll have one, because one fits my story and such.
The only issue I have with multiple worlds is when a world comprises of only 1-5 places the player can go to and do stuff at, which is a huge loss of realism and very, very detrimental to a game.
So as always, it depends not what you do but how you do it.

Technically, four worlds. It all takes place in one world, but each "chapter" takes place in one area of a world (simply consisting of a town and a dungeon). There wasn't really any need for a world map or long travels between places in a game like this.
Thief of Magic will only have one world, though.

That's a good question. Does world mean world map, or areas totally seperated from each other (like DW7's time traped areas)?
My game will have no world maps. Players will move from one area to the next all at the same scale.
I plan to have two worlds - an over world where the game starts, and an underworld which is connected to the over world by teleport chambers. I don't know if I'll have time to design the underworld, but it is part of the overall story I am planning. Anyone who's player Ultima V will have a basic idea of the world design I am going for.

My main game will have just one world. I'm trying to make my game very believable, and I am therefore trying to create one world with an interesting yet believable history and topography.

My game technically contains two worlds, but you visit only one during each game and you visit one twice over the the course of two games. Is that confusing?
I'll simplify it:
Game one - 1st World Game two - 2nd World Game three - 1st World

Ves and Dungeon Warden: u wanted to know what i meant.. I was talking about the difference from like Star Ocean 3 and FFX, Star Ocean 3 there are actually like different planets, with different stories and backrounds, FFX, they just developed Spira a lot... Do u understand now?
Also, what mostly happens is when u have more than one world, you don't develope the stories for them very far, and there is less to do However it really depends with how u make it.
