You can't DRAW a blank. That's like trying to imagine nothing.

That last post reminds me of some parties I've been too... But anyway, it's impossible to draw a blank on the world. Half of my town/world etc. names are made up words.

WOW, someone posted something of use in a non spam topic?! who would of guessed.
anyways, i make up the majority of my names too, and think thats the best route. if you are completely dry on names, use a cognate:
Urth
also, going through a phone book helps, typing in earth in a a translator helps. or, you can use words that represent what people would call it. for example, do home, habitat, earth, dirt, rest, refuge, and so forth. or use some of these. for some reason i thought 'Vaan' when i first read the topic. whatever thats worth...

Question: Is it that imperative that you have a name for your planet? I have to wonder how often it would come up. Without the technology that we have today, I don't think I'd ever talk of the planet as a whole, and even so I wouldn't need a name.
I don't have a name for the planet my game takes place on. Of course, the towns in my game aren't exactly in full cooperation... It'd be amazing that everyone would agree upon one single name for the planet given their natures. Makes me wonder why they had a planet name in Star Ocean 2.

Yeah, in a world where you generally don't know of any worlds beyond your own (aside from alternate dimensions maybe), you don't really have any reason to give a name to the world.
But if you need a name, talking gibberish until something sounds good might work. Just...don't do it while others are around.

Our planet has had a name since language was first developed. The name often refered to the stuff you walk on rather then the concept of a globe, but there has always been a name to refer to the known world, whatever the concept of the world was at the time. In some cultures the name is now used to refer to the land the people live on rather than the whole world, but their land was the whole world when they named it.
I suppost in depends on the political climate of the culture. In an area like Europe, where there were many cultures fighting for the same land, a name would be needed to refer to the world regardless of who owned it at the time. In a secluded area inhabited by one people, the land and the world would be the same.

Why do we call our star by its proper name "sun", but we don't call our moon by it's proper name? Our moon's name is "luna" btw.

Well, I've made around 320 townspeople, and it is definitely bound to come up. It sounds very unnatural and akward to a l w a y s have people say 'the world' where they would say 'earth'. Give it a try yourself. I'm too still thinking up nation (5) and world (1) names and haven't got anything (though I've been lazy for a l o n g time on this subject ). A good place for random town names is the ogre battle: march of the black queen faq at gamefaqs.com (I use that a lot). Ves's idea is good too for names (though I'm not a fan of 'Urth' ). Another good idea Ves gave a while back is to take two names and combine them, like (this was his example) Gimli + Legolas = Gimlas, and as I looked back at my towns I had one that was Topaz + Opal = Topal. Edit: On a side note, keep the spam posts in the spam forum. It is very annoying to read all this crap. It's bad enough that the domain chat forum is so ridiculously spammed, but now even the our games forum. One of the rules is to only post in a topic if you have something to add to the conversation, and if Doan were still around he'd have been enforcing it on you guys. Please do show a little respect to your peers for once. I counted 9 straight posts that s h o u l d be deleted, in this topic alone.

Because anyone can see thousands of stars in the sky and therefore a name for our own star is required to distinguish it from the others. There is only one viewable moon and so it is refered to as The Moon. Scientists called our moon Luna when it was discovered that there were other moons in the solar system. It is hard to convince people to use the name when they are so used to calling it the moon and everyone knows what they're talking about.
What this all comes down too is that you only need a name when you need to distinguish it from something else. In the case of the planet, a name was needed not to distinguish it from other planets, but to distinguish the planet from the different countries and areas that make up the planet.

Well the sun is the major visible star, and other moons are visible, but Luna is the most visible one. Should still be called Luna.

Luna is just one of many names for the moon. If you're going by the name Luna, then why don't you ask why we don't call the sun "Sol"? And as long as the referrent of whatever name used is understood by any parties involved, that's all that matters.

That's just stupid "sol" is spanish for sun. We should say "luna" and if in another language they say "lunano" or something dumb like that it's no different then having "moon" and "moonio" or something.

i think "moonio" is stretching it a little...
in french it's "la lune", but in french it's also "les hamburgers" and "le tee-shirt" and "le week-end", so...

Le, la, and Les all mean 'the' (male, female, and plural). La Lune means the moon.
Scientist tend to use the Latin names because latin is a dead langrage and they don't have to worry about the meaning of the words changing. There is no reason that your would couldn't have many names depending on the area the characters live in.
