This is the Schrodinger's cat of all math problems, this is. Think about it. 2xy = 4xWhen y=2, x is any real number, including zero. Yet, when x=0, y ceases to exist. This means the point (0, 2) exists and does not exist at the same time. It exists when y=2, but not when x=0. !!! -the smurf

wait, if X =0 then
2XY = 4X 2 x 0 x Y = 4 x 0 0 x Y = 0
therefore, Y can be any number, including 2, when X=0
Y doesn't so much disappear, as much as it looses significance when X is equal to 0.

What DW said is true. If X=0, Y is anything it wants to be, and it will still be the same number.

Unless we're solving under the real number line(R^). In which case 0 has a multiplicative inverse, the infinity element. (note: not infinity the concept).

Ha! I was seeing if there was anything about this problem online. It turns out that in a Google search for "2xy=4x" this page is the top result!

Yeah, I kinda forgot about this topic. But there's something I wanted to point out: 2XY = 4X 2 x 0 x Y = 4 x 0 0 x Y = 0 therefore, Y can be any number, including 2, when X=0 That's originally what I thought, however, if you have 0y=0, solving for y will give you 0/0, which is indeterminant. Man, Calculus is fun, but every so often we get this one trippy problem that makes my head explode. Just the other day I made a slight error that resulted in me working with feet to the fourth. -the smurf
