[white]Being an avid internet browser I have come across an enormous multitude of misspellings that make my skin crawl. Unfortunately, I myself have made many such errors during my many forays into the world wide web.
This seems to be a constantly reoccurring phenomena in today's ever increasing internet infused world. We are all in a hurry. Before we know it "we're" becomes "were" and "they're" transforms into all sort of horrible connotations. Not to mention our many speed induced abbreviations. The extreme number of lol's, thx's, ty's, brb's, afk's and others are slowly driving me insane.
Maybe I am overly sensitive and a little over dramatic, but it really is a shame the way we disgrace our own language. The American English is probably the single most uniquely blended and arranged language in history. Capable of conveying mountains of emotion and displaying the simplest of thoughts, it is a true wonder.
Not everyone in the world can be and expert speller or master of grammar, but that doesn't mean we can't take the time to make the effort. Plus plenty of sites offer the novel feature of a spell checker. Use it.
Please.
P.S. Not counting the abbreviated "web speak" words, I myself had seven spelling errors in this post.[/white]

I know what you mean, Levi. Everytime I read something in web-speak, i feel like I'm deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics or something.

Well stated. Confusions over "they're", "there", and "their" drive me insane, and they are so common. Another is "its" and "it's", and using spurious apostrophes. For example, "I am so excited about PS3 that I may buy two Playstation's in case one overheats." Just because Playstation is a proper noun does not mean it should have an apostrophe when it is plural. But anyways...

I'm sure I make a ton of mistakes, but I never use those abbreviations 'cause I hate them except jk (just kidding) and nm (nevermind) in chat/instant messenger because those you want to type and send quickly most of the time, and I at least know the things Doan said even though I'm certain I'm messed up on them by posting hastily numerous times. Oh, and I also make up tons and tons of words, like poopiness!!

yikes. sad to say, but i use a good bit of abbreviations and have misspelled words and missused words not because i don't know, but because i'm lazy. I'll try better. I guess I should, being an english teacher and all.
However, my new pet peeve is how students call everyone miss or mister. whatever happened to sir and ma'am?

There was a movement in recent times in which one school was trying to pass a policy that you are to teach children to spell things "the way they sounds."
Here's an example: stupid becomes stoopid (like you said) there becomes thar hello becomes hullo funny becomes funi smoking becomes smowking fly becomes fli
And so on. It's a sign how far our education system is degrading. Ah'm shivrn n mah bewtz.

Is that the same school that banned history education of anything prior to (approx.) 1850 because most of the predominant historical figures before then owned slaves?

1) Stupid - sounds like Stu Pid to me, which is how I describe your examples.
2) I seriously doubt any school would be launching a movement to change the english language.
