Arms of Avalon is your typical 2D horizontal shooter. What I believe, sets this one apart from many other shooters, is its flexibility in gameplay. Instead of offering just one particular experience, this game offers many options to tweak your experience to suit your preference.
From the title screen, you're offered 3 play modes(only 2 of which will actually be playable for now) and an options menu.
Playing the game is simple. You shoot ships and gain points. Destroy enough within a certain time frame and you can create a chain combo. Every game mode has more rules than that to keep track of though.
Simple mode is a simplistic game style where the only way to go is up. Collect items to increase your firepower and as your level increases, you fire more projectiles. You also have an auxiliary ability called massive damage mode. You initiate this mode when the MD bar is full, which can be filled by "eating" bullets(getting hit by them) and making chains. Once you enter this mode, you become invincible and increase the power of your singular shots by eating as many bullets as possible(you'll also glow in various purdy colors!). The more bullets eaten, the faster and more powerful your shots become. Of course you can't stay in this mode forever, as your bar drops quickly, but you can delay its fall ever so slightly by eating more bullets.
Variable mode is a bit different, it has a separate set of rules. When you start out, you have a meter to gauge the difficulty and as it increases, you get "promoted", and things get more difficult. The gauge increases as you destroy ships and it rises even faster the longer chains become. If you get destroyed, the gauge decreases. You also have to worry about your arsenal. When you start, you'll have but one weapon but as you progress, more weapons become available. You can combine one primary weapon and one secondary weapon to create various effects. Be aware that each combination will have its own pros and cons, so find the combination which suits you best. You also have an auxiliary ability, the bomb, which can damage enemies in a wide range. The bomb can also destroy bullets, so use these wisely to get the most out of them.
Evolution mode allows players to power up different aspects of their ship. As they play through the levels offered, they gain points based on their performance with which to augment their ships, in aspects such as movement speed and bomb capacity.
The options menu allows players to tweak various settings to customize the game. How many lives you want to start with, what device you use to control the ship, standard stuff I guess.
While this is the first shooter I made, I've thought a lot about the gameplay. I've tried to make the simple mode at least, an easy to pick up, but difficult to master(getting 100% kills on 1 life in simple mode's hard difficulty for example) affair.
Keep in mind that not all sounds have been placed, so with some weapons you'll hear stuff, with others you won't. A manual is included, but it's the old one. Still, you can learn about variable mode and the controls at least.
After you press enter, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. Press F1 to return to the main menu and F4 for fullscreen mode. At the end of the level, restarting will basically restart the game. Don't worry, it's a simple executable, just download it and click the large red ball.
