Deep in the bowels of New Jersey, a copy of RPGMaker 3 has made it's way in to my hands.

How are the items? objects? Is everything fantasy style or can I get away with some type of Sci-fi deal?

I'm a looney. I've had this for only about an hour. Had one of these: And watched some of these: And I just spent about an hour with RPGMaker 3. I am frustrated by the layout. I am an old school computer programmer. I learned how to program by punching cards. My early posts about RPGM2 feature rants about how I hate shared file systems. Well, get ready for rants about how much more I hate Graphical User Interfaces. I miss DOS. I have strong logic skills and will adapt, but since this kind of system is alien to me, it will take time. Remember; I only recently made my first home computer upgrade in over 20 years and am slow to pick up on these new-fangled gizmos. It took me time to get scripts working together in RPGM2, but I took to scripting right away. This is weird because I can't even find anything familiar yet. Well... I refuse to read the instructions until tomorrow at work where I can get paid for it!! Maybe it will make more sense then. I'll post something in the way of a tutorial of anything I figure out that seems either really basic, but elusive, or anything really nifty. Good luck with it. Peace. EDIT: See what fine Belgian Ale does? I wrote that before logging in and posted that before reading your responses. Dark Horizons: Sci Fi will be nearly impossible. Items and objects are nice looking, but very period looking. Some variety, we'll see what can be done... And BlodKnight: Yes, I am indeed pleased to have this even though it is a pale nothing of a shadow of a turd compared to RPGM2. Peace.

Been toying with this for 3 hours, and I'd like to say EASY MY FOOT!!! Sure, setting up towns and making enemies/characters are a breeze, but the Field editor is about as confuzing as me playing around with the inside of a computer....
I'd also like to say that the loading times and battles get on my nerves quick. mostly cuz after i'm done battling, i get 'lost' in where or what i was doing, they're so slow paced.. ugh...
Anyway, the graphics are marvelous, even better than I had expected, and the event editor is TONS better then I thought, though I still dont have the grasp of it. (been playing Dear Brave heart so far, it sucks...)
Anyway, no hi five for me eh? (hi fives self) w00t!!

*hi-fives everyone who has RPG Maker 3*
I also don't like the pace of the game. Constant loading, slow battles, ugh. It took me a while to grasp the field editor, I think it could've been done better but the 2D>3D transition makes up for it.

don't have much time right now, so i'll put up a thourough (sp?) analysis tomorrow. but overall, everything's easy except the creation of events (only cause i haven't completely understood it yet. and the only thing i don't know how to do is make building interiors...yet.
gotta go...like i said, i'll write more tomorrow.

I am happy everyone here loves it. Because if noone did. Noone would be able to play my game!
I am seriously in love this game (I dont care about the load times much cuz I have a HDD). The graphics, music, artwork are all amazing, and the DBS is beautiful as well. RPGM2 is still my favorite, but not by much. Ill try and get a demo up of my new game in a couple of days. Since I think I have some fans of my games here.
Anyways, love, not hate!

I am happy everyone here loves it. ... Anyways, love, not hate! Sorry to disillusion you, but not everyone here loves this game. I am extremely let down by the user interface. It makes absolutely no sense to me. I never liked the GUI (Graphical User Interface) and I was around when it was new!! Damn You Bill Gates! Damn you to hell!! Or at least to Purgatory (since some people inexplicably like GUIs). I'll read the manual at work today (because I want to get paid to read it... get some of my money back!). That may help. I'll adjust, but first impression is extremely negative. I am just trying to ignore my first impression when I sound optimistic. I'll give it time to grow on me. We'll see. Peace.

alright. RPGM3 is easy, but those of us who are so used to 2 will have to adjust to it.
lets start with the first menu: The World.
in here you design the fields, towns, dungeons and layout (which is basically object and event placement put together). in the field editor, DO NOT draw a huge thing, because a tiny rectangle is huge on its own. its almost like microsoft paint or similar programs. fill in the grass, draw water, dirt, etc. then you have the elevation, which allows you to raise and lower the terrain. this is much easier than RPGM2, but it is still difficult to do the drawing.
towns are HUGE!!! and with only 100 character slots, it'll be difficult to keep them heavily populated. anyway, choose a layout and it'll auto-create the terrain and place some fence and dirt path. you then choose the bgm, whether or not magic is allowed, etc. this is all you do in the town editor.
the dungeon editor is simple. draw the floorplan of a floor at a time, and add doors (which open upon pressing X), traps, crumbling walls, etc. this is amazingly fun. add stairs, and the best thing about it is...NO WARP EVENTS!!!!!! you do not need to create a single warp event.
the layout editor is where you place all of the events and objects into your towns, dungeons and fields. the building editor and event editors are included in here, so you can make them as you design. much more convenient than 2.
the second menu is the Characters and Items.
Characters require classes to have stats, so make the classes and the abilities all at once in the class editor. then you can create characters, party members, and NPCs in the character editor. they even have an NPC menu where you can type dialogue and desing movement patterns right there.
the monsters work the same as the characters.
monster parties is just grouping the monsters together.
items...haven't experimented with this yet, so i can't say.
that's all the time i've got, cause i gotta go to a guitar lesson soon. i'll be back later with more stuff and some of my thoughts, so stay tuned.

My RPGM3 review: 1st off, my review may change as the game grows on me..
Character design:
Damn poor if I must say..4 colors for each character?? And not even a color pallette..ouch.. The character designs themselves are very generic. Warrior, Mage, thief, etc....kinda reminds me too much of the Eye of the beholder series.
Now, if anyone knows me, they know one thing.."I'm a sci-fi freak"..Although most of the toolsets and objects are fantasy style, I will still find away around this setting and come up with something in a modern type or a sci-fi type setting.. As it is, my main guy is a normal townfolk guy, who, in closer inspection is wearing jeans(using the color pallette)..So I can make a modern dude gets sucked into a magical fantasy world kinda story..And as for aliens, well if you use your imagination when checking out"Krakken, or electric Eel", in the monster editor, they can almost pass as alien-life forms... Now the ingame battles are pretty awesome, although limiting on what types of effects you can use and the type of attack you use. Level Design By far the most impressive tool in the set..Making cool fields and witnessing your character traverse across them is breath taking. now the town editor is a little weak, as you can only place so many(unique objects) in them, including buildings and the such. The drawing tool to make them is simple and fun. dungeons are very cool looking, and the traps are a bonus. I really like the story teller idea for title making and game ending, but would rather create my own from scratch. Options The worse for me is the abandonment of a VFX editor..Imagine what types of effect you'd be able to create with this new software??? Man, just the thought!! No camera control?? You gotta be kidding? Well so much for dramatic events If possible to even make cutscenes, you are very limited to moving the screen or making your character walk to a certain point in the map. No setting up an event and some kind of lightning hit him or something..
More later..............

I just saw RPGM3 at the mall when I was looking around. I think my next paycheck is going to go to it. Even though it's limiting, it seems like it would be a lot of fun to me, especially since the graphics look pretty damn good.

yeah, i plan on doing Spirit Saga (demo available at my site, check my forum for info) and probably a short comedy (but not spoof) game on 3, and then going back to 2. i dunno. right now i don't feel like playing two, but the whole chronicle series is designed for it and i will stick by that. for some reason, with all of this 3 stuff, like the clock tower, the carnival song in the music menu, the clown character, the whol day/night thing with different stuff happening at each time- kinda makes me want to do a Majora's Mask type thing...but i dunno at all if that will happen. ANYWAY...BACK TO THE POINT! yeah, i love the world editors (field, town and dungeon) and the storytellr is long but fun. i'm getting pretty good at it. the one thing i absolutely hate is that you can only have 100 characters. i'd have to say that's probably the ONLY thing i hate. no warp events is like christmas coming early! ;D i also like how the only things that count in the event database are the standard events, and not buildings and characters. the one other thing i don't like is that there aren't many good visual effects. theres a good selection, but i find myself using the same ones over and over for multiple different spells. Dear Brave Heart is very easy so far (i'm at the ancient castle) and all of the enemies (non bosses) seem to die with one or two hits. is this how most RPGs are? cause if it is, then i gots some fixing to do! so there's my thoughts on the game. i'm very glad i bought it, and i'm going to use the crap out of it until i can't possibly use it anymore (which seems unlikely). so like i said, i'm working on one game now and have plans for another, and that's all i have as of now for 3...then its back to the chronicles and 2. i hope that wasn't long and boring... -the smurf

I dont know, maybe a store bought 40 GB HDD would work. I have the Sony HDD, and I know that a regular HDD works with some third party ps2 programs. Like linux on PS2, and a progam called freeloader (I dont use any of em) so maybe a store bought HDD may work.

I'm gonna keep mine and finish a game.
Maybe eventually play some elses (far in the future... I have too many RPGM2 games backed up).
But I'm glad I contributed to Agetec's profits. Some of which DAMN WELL BETTER go into giving us a decent RPGM4!
Peace.
