It doesn't have as much power as RPGM2, but it still is fun enough and good games can be made with it. Also, if you want to check out some good games, get a Dex Drive (If they still sell those things) and go to the RPG Maker Pavilion or Mag to look for games to download.
Just in case you don't know what a Dex Drive is, it's the PS1 version of the Max Drive/X Port/etc.

They don't sell Dex Drives anymore unfortuanately.
Best thing you can do is look for them on eBay, or use an PSX emulator and your RPG Maker 1 disc with your PC.

Personally (contrary to most oppinions on this site), RM1 is my favorite of them all. This is mostly because I am a sucker for old school graphics and this game has 'beautiful' 16-bit that stirs nostalgia wonderfully.
This is more like a blend of RM2 and RM3 (even though it came before them). It is not easy persay, and IS powerful-but it is not hard to master and contains elements unique and fun to use (Anime Maker). So give it a shot, and they did have Dexdrives on Ebay last I heard...

Despite what's been said, RPG Maker is not that comparable to the others. It's way more limiting than the second game, but a bit more powerful than the 3rd. It's easy to get into and use also. Dex drives have been discontinued, but there are other methods like the above one. If you liked RPG Maker 2, put your expectation meter lower for RPG Maker, and you'll have a lot of fun with it.

I disagree even though you cant do the amazing stuff in 2, you can make your own character which I think RPGM2 should support. I really like the way its nostalgic. Those are my favorites. I have only had 1 day and its super easy to use. ^_^

RPGM1 was the first one I played (2 wasn't out at the time), and it's still very good. If you can get past the graphics and the lack of variables or extensive effects, you can make some nice games.

I LOVED RPM1 back in the day. Though I can't really ever see myself going back and making games on it, I can still see myself going back and playing me and Bigfoot's lame ass games (which actually were awesome)

I got the RPGM1 several years ago. It is much more limited than the RPGM2, but I had a blast with it all the same. I have a total of 5 completed games on it, and the game I'm doing now on RPGM2 was an idea I tried to realize on RPGM1 but couldn't. It's fairly easy to master and in some ways-especially graphics, it's very flexible, and FAR faster than RPGM2. With a little imagination, you can plug in commands to get about any effect you want. If you want any help, this at least is one game I can help you with.

RPG Maker 1 can be fun and not so fun; it really depends if you like your game or not. If you're getting bored with your creation and can't stand on working on it, you have a problem. If you can't bear the pain any longer, than quit and make something that you like. In fact, this message applies to any game maker out there.
Now, is for your other question, is RPGM 1 good? Certainly! Keep in mind though, it does have its disadvantages, but it have its advantages however. RPG Maker 1 is a very simple tool to make a game and you don't have as much freedom with your programming as you do with RPG Maker 2. That doesn't mean that you can't make a great game with it though. Sure, you can't possibly create a game that'll be comparable to those great Squaresoft (now Square Enix) since it has deplorable graphics and sound. But you can come awfully close by having a rich story and such.
I think RPG Maker 1 is a lot less frustrating than RPG Maker 2 in that it's a breeze to make a game with (of course you can make it hard for yourself). One thing I hate about RPG Maker 2 is that making maps and VFXs are so hard to create for me because of clunky controls. Also, for some, programming on RPG Maker 2 is a bit more confusing than programming with RPG Maker 1 (Although I don't know how to program with using RPG Maker 2, I have no complaints about this issue since learning how to program will be possible with time and patients).
I personally prefer RPG Maker 1 overall (I just can't get into RPG Maker 2), but you can use RPG Maker 2 if you feel like. But if you're concerned if RPG Maker 1 is dead, I'm here to tell you that it isn't. In fact, there are quite a few in the making (my game Monkey Brothers for an example?)

I started playing RPGM1 again. I wouldn't replace it with RPGM2, but it still is very fun. Right now, I'm making a game with a story I'm making up as I go along. I probably won't ever release it to the community, but it still is a lot of fun making.
So, anyone who does plan on buying it, it's a great game. However, if you want to have more flexibility in making a game, get RPGM2. But, while RPGM1 has it's limits, it is well worth it.

RPG maker 1 is what I started with, I understood most of it within the course of a week or two. ^^
Then again, I worked on my game for 70+ hours... >_>

"Best thing you can do is look for them on eBay, or use an PSX emulator and your RPG Maker 1 disc with your PC. "
I don't know if its possible (i don't have a PS2 max drive yet) but couldn't you (if you have a ps2) just copy the RPGM1 save file onto a PS2 memory and use a max drive? or vice versa, get a RPGM1 game/save on a PS2 card with a max drive then transfer it on to a PS1 card?

I don't know why, but you cannot put any PS1 saves on PS2 memory cards. You would expect them to be backwards compatible, but they are not. This means that if you want to play a PS1 game, even on your PS2, you have to dig up those old memory cards. Fortunately, they do still plug into the PS2 memory card ports.

No, i'm not 100% certain, but i'm pretty sure you can store PS1 saves on PS2 cards, you can't save or load PS1 saves from a PS2 card but you can copy them to and from PS2 cards. i thought that anyway...

I don't know why, but you cannot put any PS1 saves on PS2 memory cards. Umm... yeah you can, i have, i just checked This means that if you want to play a PS1 game, even on your PS2, you have to dig up those old memory cards. Fortunately, they do still plug into the PS2 memory card ports. yes that part is true, like i said "i'm pretty sure you can store PS1 saves on PS2 cards, you can't save or load PS1 saves from a PS2 card but you can copy them to and from PS2 cards. " Nope can't I tried it, you have to use your PS1 memory card. what exactly did you try? if you're playing say RPGM1 on your PS2 with a PS2 memory card in the port and try to save it, yeah it won't work. But if you use a PS1 card, save it on the (PS1)card and then restart your PS2 and leave the disc tray open to go to the browser, now pop in a PS2 card in the second slot and go to the PS1 card in slot 1, go to a file and select copy, it'll allow you to copy it onto the PS2 card (maybe this only works with sony cards) in slot 2. Now you still can't load or save using the PS2 card on the PS1 game, but theoretically i'm thinking if you copy a PS1 save onto PS2 card and use the Max Drive to upload it online, or vice versa. But anyway, you CAN put PS1 saves onto PS2 cards using the PS2 Browser thingy

Yeah, that's as far as I had known too. I can definitely understand why PS1 games can only read PS1 memory cards: because they were only programmed to read, save, and load data with, onto, and from PS1 memory cards... first because Sony had not yet planned to have the PS2 be backwards compatable and later so that Sony could keep making better money by selling PS1 memory cards that can't hold nearly as many game saves as PS2 memory cards (PS1 memory card = 15 kb, PS2 memory card = 8,000 kb). I had heard someone discuss the idea of using the PS2 browser to store PS1 game saves onto a PS2 memory card too, to more or less, use the PS2 memory card as one absolutely massive storage unit for currently inactive PS1 game saves... but I completely forget the result. Logically speaking though, I doubt the Max Drive and X Port have been programmed to read PS1 game saves, otherwise they would have advertised it (and God **** the X Port would have advertised it, that ****ing manual!!!). I've found PS1 memory cards are WAAAY cheaper on ebay, even when they're brand ****ing new!!! Stores rip you off by about 8 bucks per PS1 memory card now a days...poop.
