So, who has XP?
I'd like to make a game, but:
I havent figured out RGSS yet (I am figuring it out slowly, though)
I Suck at drawing.
I cant make music.
and yeah, thats bout it.
I dont feel like using the default RTP stuff, but man, drawing every character, tileset, etc could be time consuming.

XP is the best of all of them, imo, because you can expand its capabilities far beyond what they give you. there are almost no restrictions on what you can do, and it's very easy to grasp the basics. good luck with your endeavors. -the smurf

I asked an equally potentially dumb question in Smurf's forum, but here it goes... Will RPGMXP only work for Windows XP? I'd like to get my hands on this, but I only have 98. Edit: Sorry if this is off-topic.

RPG Maker XP's official site says these are the minimum system requirements.
Microsoft® Windows® 98/98SE/Me/XP/2000 PC with 800MHz Intel® Pentium® III equivalent or higher processor At least 128 MB of system RAM 1024x768 or better video resolution in High Color mode DirectSound-compatible sound card At least 100 MB of available hard disk space
so, as long as you meet these requirements, you should be able to download and use the software.

I applied at rpgmxp.net or w/e 2 weeks ago. I am STILL on the admission queue or w/e to get confirmed.
And I am well aware of it's capabilities, with the feature of Ruby/RGSS. It resembles some C++, but it just seems so 'wild' and unorganized. I dunno.
I'll show something on rpgmxp soon. or maybe not. still haven't an int. connection, but atleast i've had a few 'light' weeks with my job, which has given me a couple days off, so i can get online and such.

With RPG Maker XP, you have to learn Ruby to use RGS and make significant edits to the game. While you only have to learn the basic to intermediate stuff on Ruby to get by(which is pretty easy), you also have to learn how XP intergrates the Ruby language into its program.
I used RPG Maker XP for a while. I find it great, but Game Maker seems easier to do complex stuff on with GML, which is basically a combination of many languages and is object oriented, so if you're fluent in Java for example, you should be able to jump right in without too much trouble. I myself have no programming experience, but I learned GML pretty fast.

I've had Game Maker for many years now (in fact, I've suggested it here, before, also), so I know all about GML. However, it is tedious to do EVERYTHING for your game (unless you d/l sfx/gfx from somewhere). I like how rpgmxp atleast gives you something to start with. RGSS isn't all that complex, but like I said, it seems unorganized. Rather than declaring an integer, float, or string, you just make a variable that automatically adapts to whatever value it's assigned. I'm not quite used to that (makes it easier, but still confusing, never the less...). anyway, I've been able to learn some of the keywords and such, and I'm picking up on some things ('super' and 'self' are still a blur as of yet, but we'll see in awhile). I gotta say that learning C++ sure does help making this somewhat easier, though
