Yep, new FBOP demo. It's significantly larger sized due to the fact that I'm trying something different. You no longer need the RTP at all, as I've included each file by itself. I think (but I don't know for sure) that this has increased the file size. I'm still working on figuring out how to compress it further. However, I think it should work now because all the files have been put in manually, so there should be nothing missing. *crosses fingers* Here it iscontains: First two towns First two dungeons Custom music All aspects of first demo plus whatever else is in there... enjoy. -the smurf

the title song is the same off of Tales of Symphonia.
Am I right?
I'll edit this post and give a full review, later, though.
**Edit** Mkay, lotta songs off of tales of symphonia...
are you sure its custom?
Anyway, I like the theme so far. Dialogue is pretty good, but the dirt paths on the maps kinda threw the maps themselves off.
People take the shortest route to anything. Its nature. In your game, they twisted, and winded around everything.
I'll try finding more feedback later

Well, I stated before that there were placeholders ripped from ToS, but as I compose the custom songs they have been added to the game. There are four custom tracks in the game so far: Arcul, outside town paths, Langdon Woods, and Landover. As for the paths...I'll try to make them more straightforward for my newer maps. I figured they looked more natural this way, but I guess not. Meh, no big deal. That's okay. Thanks for trying, at least. -the smurf

In this thread? I don't see it... Those were actually really good , they fit in appropriately to the max. good job! Paths dont really form from nature, unless it's Human nature, which is humans taking the quickest route. I believe there's a Map guide at the pavilion that states how to make paths look 'actual'. I'm stuck at the first boss. I cant seem to beat him , is there something I'm missing, cuz he seems WAY to strong.

Ah, sorry. I got confused...I don't normally make a new topic for new demos and stuff, so I figured it was the same topic. It should say it where I posted the first demo... Thank you. Yeah, I read that a while ago. Either way, I'll make them more straightforward as I continue. Thanks for pointing that out. Are you using skills at all? He should go down in like three hits...I think he has 150HP, and the skills do close to 50 damage each (or something...) Thanks for the feedback so far. -the smurf

I tried downloading it and messing with a bunch of my computer's options like turning off the firewall (I didn't know what I was trying besides that), but I couldn't get it to run either...

I'm using skills, yeah.
I either miss, or he does a critical, and I end up dying.

wow, you must be getting really unlucky, then. if you absolutely can't get a break where the battle doesn't screw you over, you can always edit it in the game file to get past him. the game file is not encrypted. and Will, i don't see how it's not working... ...with this file, here's the steps i take to open it: -unzip -extract to wherever -open the extracted file -extract again to wherever -open extracted folder -inside should be all the files used in-game ----you should see: audio, data, and graphics folders, the game application, the config settings, and the project. -double click on the game application to start game are you doing all these steps? good luck... -the smurf

Oh boy, yeah, I am. And actually I found out that I have Windows ME (not XP like I'd previously thought/said, sorry), and still when I try to play it, it comes up on screen for half-a-second then automatically closes. Gl.

Ok, few problems.
1) Flame Thrust seems to always miss, but not Hell Pyre. 2) After that boss, everything went all kinda 'sudden'. I didn't feel any form of emotion when there should have been, and the song for that guy's death (i left his name out for spoiler purposes) was way off. 3) I headed up north quite a ways, and suddenly got a 'Cannot find Panorma 'Mountain', and it closed out.
Also, I *highly* suggest changing the name of Hell Pyre, Panacea Bottle, and perhaps TP. I find that it reminds me too much of a game that it isn't-- tales of symphonia/legendia/abyss/phantasia, etc.
With an original story like this, it'd be somewhat better (I think), to have original names, etc. I dont mean you need to go to the length of changing Potion, Elixer, etc. But those names are kinda strong to the Tales franchise.
Then again, maybe your one post said they were just fillers. Either way, I see alot of potential with this, and I'm very sure you can make it a really great game.
Don't take my criticism harshly. I do like the story, and the environments are nicely done.
Anyway, there's my input.

And I have problems myself. I have the RTP and it works for other RPGMXP games, but when I go to play your game, it says that it can't find a file (Graphics/Windowskins/talk1). There were two other files before it (can't remember them now), but I ended up replacing them. As for this file, I can't find a way to replace it. Any ideas?

Reynolds: You need to download it and put it in your System folder (actually, Smurf, you *should* include the .dll in the folder, also*) Google it, download it, and move it to C:\Windows\System\System32
Doshi: He's using a custom Window skin, so the RTP can't help there. It loads up just fine for me. Do you have it in the 'Graphics/Windowskin' Sub folder?

Holy cow... 0.o ...so many problems.
Let me explain what I did. I read at rmxp.org a way to make the RTP not required, by importing each RTP element manually as a custom graphic/audio/whatever and then changing the RTP dependency to nothing. As for doyle's problem, I guess I must have left the panorama out. To fix this, you can open the game file and go to the database (i trust you know what to do, since you have XP) and remove the mountain panorama from the mountain tileset.
Doshi: doyle's right. i made sure to include all that stuff in the folder. i don't know why it's not being detected.
i guess i totally forgot about including the .dll ... i'll make sure to get it next time. thank you for bringing it to my attention.
now to doyle's comments:
i'll investigate...
the music is temporary, and i'll look into the 'emotion' in the cutscenes. the thing is, though, "that guy" wasn't really known by any of the characters or the player that much, so are you really supposed to feel emotional? hmm...
see above
very little is set in stone, and almost anything is subject to change. i don't care for potion or elixir either...unfortunately, i haven't yet thought of my item names in real detail.
thank you.

I realize the music is temporary, but still. Guy died, and he stood there, and others stood there, and it just seemed... off.
I dunno.

I downloaded the DLL and now it works flawlessly in Linux. This is pretty cool!
I only had it running briefly (I have a lot of classwork to do), but right away the slow text speed annoyed me. I read about 3-5 times faster than that. Is there any way to include a title screen option to speed up the text? (not necessarily on the title screen, but in an options menu that you can get to from the title screen)

heh...time to thank ccoa for the message system script. if you press enter or space bar (maybe other keys, too, but i'm not sure) you can display the whole text box at once, just like in most games. the default doesn't let you do that, but the message script that i'm using will let you do that. i'll see if i can change the default speed, but until then you can speed it up yourself by hitting enter or space bar to show the text all at once. glad you got it to work! and doyle - he's not just standing there, he's replaced with a fallen over sprite of him that is lying dead on the ground. i'll look into the scene and see what i can add. thanks for your input. -the smurf

By standing there, I meant no one did anything to prevent what happened; not even him!
The assassin said that she (or he?)'d take him out, then *walked* up to that guy, and yeah. No struggle, no fleeing, everyone sat there and watched, even the guy being killed.
Once again, I still had fun playing this game, don't get me wrong; but I figured I'd try helping a little. I apologize if I went to extreme on pointing things out, or anything.

No struggle, no fleeing, everyone sat there and watched, even the guy being killed. Ah, I see what you mean. Don't worry - as odd as it may seem, there is reason for that. I thought you meant afterward, where I do sense a lack of emotion. Once again, I still had fun playing this game, don't get me wrong; but I figured I'd try helping a little. I apologize if I went to extreme on pointing things out, or anything. No, that's exactly what I want. I need criticism and stuff like that to better the overall product. Thank you for sharing you're thoughts. On a side note, have you gotten into the Redwood Mountains or are you still getting an error? -the smurf
