Since October, I have made 4 updates in about a month or so; therefore, I think it's safe to say that the Domain is back in business. I just updated and added a new page for RPGM2 guides and FAQs. Also, I mentioned a contest. Before I get to that, however, I have to remind everyone of the GoogleAds that are on the website. I used to ask everyone to go click on some ads to help support the Domain and the occasional contests I had planned on having. I have used the GoogleAd money that I received up to this point to pay for the first year of webspace and also to give out 3 file transfer devices. I must also admit that I received about $75 that was not spent on the Domain, but instead used by me to get through a financially tough time in which I was barely able to pay the bills. Due to my actions, I felt it would have been selfish to mention clicking on ads when you guys were getting limited benefits from doing it.
Well, my credit card has just been billed for another year of Domain registration and hosting services, which cost $75, so I now consider myself paid back to you guys and back on firm ground. Any clicks on GoogleAds (remember, they must be the ones on my site and not the ones on the message board) will generate revenue that will go toward Domain contests and future hosting fees.
That being said, now it's time to announce the new contest I have in mind. We all like to create games, and we all like to see others play our games and leave us feedback. Many of us also play commercial RPGs, but it seems to me that there is a lack of motivation, for whatever reason, to play the community members' games. I'm not trying to force anyone to do anything, as I myself am guilty of saying, "I don't have the time to play games right now," and yet here I am, with time to update the website and post to the message board.
I think a lot of us have played some of the early, unpolished RPGM2 created games and quickly tired of an abundance of bugs, repetitive battles, or some other weakness in gameplay. Since then, you would probably say that your skills have improved, and so have everyone else's here. Please give these games a second chance, and you just might have fun. </lecture>
On that note, my contest idea is something that I don't believe has ever been done in any RPGM community. I am going to pay you guys to play these games. That is no joke at all. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, we should all have a little free time that could be well-spent playing Domain members' games.
So here's the deal: go to the website, and click on some ads. I don't recommend clicking on more than 4 or 5 per day, a couple times a week, as it could otherwise be considered fraud. If 20 people click on 10 ads per week for the next 6 weeks, that equals 1200 ad clicks. At 5 to 10 cents per click, that is $60-120. To that amount, I will add $50 more for previously generated GoogleAd money, and with that, we will have our contest.
What you must do is play and beat a game, and post a review in the proper thread in the still-to-come Contest forum. I understand that some games are not "beatable" games (Doyleman's "The Farm Life", for example). For those games, try to log at least 3 hours of playing time before calling it quits.
For every game review of every member during this holiday season, the total amount of ad money generated will be divided up. So for a small example, let's say there was $66 in ad money total, and someone played and reviewed 5 games and 3 other people each reviewed 2 games. That would be a total of 11 game reviews, for $6 per review, meaning that the one person would earn $30 while the other 3 would earn $12 each. Not bad for playing games.
Other technicalities: previously played games do not count. If you want, you can replay and re-review a game, but please be honest. This is not going to be a huge amount of money anyways, so cheating the system is not going to get you rich. You also cannot get credit for playing your own games, for obvious reasons. Different people can play the same game, and I encourage it, but I may implement a system to encourage all games to be played. Perhaps a game that is only reviewed by one person will receive 1.5 credits instead of just 1. The games must be created by Domain members, so playing and reviewing Shawn Forbes' games (for example), does not count, no matter how good they might be. Finally, please be honest. This is not really a competition, but merely a simple way to encourage people to play games. Remember that if you do something dishonest, you are only hurting fellow members of the Domain community.
I hope to see a few replies here regarding this contest. If it is well-received, I will start a Contest forum where the reviews can be posted, and you can begin play immediately.
