i have 3 visual effects, one where the ground and the background fade completely black and glows in that fashion by fading in and out, one where a whole bunch of symbols come up and flash, and then one where a giant beam shoots the enemy. i was wondering how i can keep the black ground and background repeating while the other visual effects continue on?

Set the mark point of the visual effect to 1. The mark point determines at what point the next visual effect can start. This means you could set the point higher then 1 if you wanted the next effect to start at a different point. If the first effect is set on infinite repeat (repeat = 0), then you might need to place an Apply Together command before it in order for the next VFX to start.
