Has anyone played this (or the first one)? I played it on New Year's Eve with one my friends at his girlfriend's house, and it was a lot of fun. After considering it for about a week, I went out and bought it on Sunday, and I haven't regretted it. My friends came down for the BCS Championship game (let's not talk about that), and we had a ton of fun playing this thing. It's quite challenging, but also very fun and rewarding. It makes a great party game, and I can't wait to get a second controller so that people can play duets and stuff.
Anyways, if you're wondering, the game is totally worth it. I would venture to say that it is the funnest PS2 game out there.

I bought guitar hero I and II for my foreign exchange bro for christmas. Indeed it is fun but in my opinion, DDR is a lot more fun. Plus ddr is more physical. But yeah it's a good game, I'ld recommend it.

I have the first one, and I freaking love it. But I'm so strapped for cash lately I still haven't picked up 2.

From what I've heard, the song selection is a bit more diverse on the first one. On the second one, as you near the end, most of the songs are pretty heavy metal. There is a great mixture through the first 30 or so, but apparently, the creators felt like the most challenging songs were hard core metal. Some highlights of the song selection are (in order of appearance):
Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench Alice in Chains - Them Bones Black Sabbath - War Pigs Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine Rage Against the Machine - Killin' in the Name The Allman Brothers Band - Jessica Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
There are also a ton of bonus songs, but most of those, too, are heavy metal. There were a few that I liked, including "Push Push (Lady Lightning)" by Bang Camaro and "Mr. Fix-It" by the Amazing Royal Crowns.
I have been playing it a little bit almost every day, and I'm starting to get pretty good. Although I was already doing well on Medium, I went back to Easy to get 5 stars on each song (to unlock a special guitar), and in the process I got my first perfect song: "Bad Reputation" by Thin Lizzy. I'm currently working on the same feat on Medium (I'm through the 26th song), and just the other night, I was able to beat my first song on Hard.
The transition from Easy to Medium isn't bad at all: it adds one more note to play (making 4), a few more chords, and the note sequences are a bit trickier. Going to Hard, however, adds a 5th note, which means you have to start sliding your fret hand around on the guitar while playing, which is pretty difficult if you're not used to it (I've never played guitar before), and everything gets harder.
I find that the harder the level gets, the more you feel as if you're actually playing the guitar. There's something truly satisfying about ripping off a perfect sequence of really difficult notes. That said, I can't see myself beating all of the songs on Expert any time soon. I think I will get too antsy to start playing the real guitar before that ever happens.

i've been thinking about getting this for a while. my question is this: since i already play guitar, how would that affect my ability to play the game? would it have any effect? would it make it easier? would it make it harder?
i've heard it's a really good game, so i thought it might be worth trying out.

Yeah, I started on normal, and I have beat the game on hard. My cousin owns the second one, so sometimes we play co-op together on it. I like to play freebird and warpig.

Having said that, playing the guitar will almost certainly help you with a few aspects of the game. It's important once you get to higher difficulties to be able to strum both up and down (most people just strum down at first). If you've already played the guitar, this should be natural. Secondly, you will probably have good dexterity in your fret hand, and be able to move it around to the different buttons with ease, and this, too, will help a lot once you get to hard. Another aspect which is in GH2 that you might find familiar is the use of hammer-ons and pull-offs: it is necessary to use these in some of the fast guitar solos. Finally, I imagine that you will have the rhythm of playing lead guitar parts down pretty well, and that is one of the main things that you need in this game. So in short, if you are already familiar with playing an instrument (but especially with the guitar), it should help you tremendously in this game. You will still want to start out on Easy, because you get bonus items and stuff for beating the game (and then getting 5 stars on each song) on each difficulty level, but I think you will easily be able to work up to Hard, at least. Once you get there, it will get pretty tough, but I'm sure you'll have fun with it. Practice is really helpful to slow down some tough songs and get them down pat before you try to play it for real. So get the game, and have fun with it. I got my copy from Best Buy for $80 (including guitar) before taxes, so that might be a good place to look. It might be good to go to BestBuy.com first to make sure that it's actually in stock there.

I'd say it's a fun time, not something that I can play for too long though but it did a good job of keeping me occupied. Maybe I dont enjoy it as much as others do cause I suck at it lol. Yea, forget normal, I am master on easy though lol.

One of my brothers beat it on Hard and is half way on extreme. He beat 'Freebird' on extreme, so there's only a few other hard ones to go through.

Rent it first, Smurf. I know it may sound like I'm being arrogant here since I haven't played either of the games, but I've played Drum Beat Mania (which from the title you can imagine what it is) and an old friend of mine who played drums for real hated it yet I loved it. One of the reasons why GH 1 and 2 are so appealing is because you can "play" all of these awesome songs so quickly without actually learning to play them, not to mention that when you "play" them drums, other guitars, and bass come out of the TV's speakers too.
