Well I've been playing the bass off and on for about 2 years or so now, mainly just as a hobby nothing serious, and decided to record some stuff. So these are just two kind of mini jams. The first one is completely off the cuff, and it shows a bit as it's a bit rough and doesn't all flow together, but the second is quite a bit cleaner and more coherent. Of course I haven't gotten to the point of writing music yet, mainly because I really never taught myself music theory, I just kind of go with what sounds good and try to build from there. So both are improv, just the second was practiced a few times before recording. www.thetruecoolness.com/sound/TTC-Bass-Jam-03132007.mp3www.thetruecoolness.com/sound/TTC-Bass-Jam-03152007.mp3So let me know what you think.

I'm listening to the first one right now. The off-the-cuff nature of it is clear, because as you said, it doesn't all flow together. It also has varying rhythms in a few spots, without a consistent beat. This is all fine, however, given that it's improvisational. There is definitely a lot of good stuff in there, and much of it sounds technically difficult to play, so I thought that it was very good.
I liked the second one a lot. I could definitely imagine it being the bass line of a rock song with a very minimal guitar, because it stands much on its own.

Yeah I think I'd have a problem being a actual bassist, given most of the riffs I come up with are not exactly background stuff . But yeah the first one does have a few diamonds in the rough haha, but yeah there are a lot of parts I go off rhythm, miss notes, mute them etc. The intro is me trying to play fast, haha, and somewhat doing it. Wish I could come up with more stuff, but it seems my muse is out of town for a while. I have come up with a few small riffs since then, but none I could really string together. I was really impressed with the second one, wish I could remember all of it, as like I said I don't write them down, mostly because it would be pretty tedious and I usually don't know what I'm playing till I play it. As for the technical difficulty, it's average, though given the amount of variation above most songs as the bass is usually highly repetitive, mainly because it's kind of supposed to be, it might be a little harder. Didn't really ever get to any hammer-ons and pull-offs in those, wish I could slap, but I can't. I can pop pretty well though, just can play anywhere near as fast when popping. So at some point I'll come up with some more, but who knows when it will be. Creativity is pretty random.
