Yeah, I have no idea. I have at least 1/16 Native American, along with some English and Scottish, but who knows what else?

My ancestry get me MAD!!
I am 100% Russian. All four Grandparents arrived on boats from there and I am second generation American.
When going back to school I needed financial aid and was far too old for student loans (I'd be an indentured servant for the rest of my life!).
I wanted grants.
There were many unclaimed grants for minorities and women (and NOTHING for middle aged white males!). Grants are all so tightly targeted that I, as a part timer, did not qualify for anything.
So I told them to change my race to Asian. There were MANY unclaimed grants for Asians ONLY!
They laughed and told me I could not change my race.
I insisted. I am Russian. Russia is on the Continent of Asia. Therefore I am an Asian.
Give Me Money!!!
They did not believe me. But I still think I am an Asian.
And deserve their special treatment.
I SWEAR that when I become fabulously wealthy I shall establish a scholarship fund for Middle Aged White Males ONLY. Their hair must be at least shoulder length and they must be majoring in a "Pure" science (Chemistry, Physics, etc) (no Chemical Engineers or other diluted Sciences).
I bet I get called Racist for it too.
But why then are the other Racially targeted scholarships not racist?
I hate America.
Does that answer your question?

That might be a bit extreme. I don't think there are too many countries that give as many grants as America does, even though they do give them on a pretty convoluted basis. I understand that many minorities have received unjust discrimination in the past which is certainly a factor in their current economic status. I don't understand the reason why we must still base our decisions on "minority discrimination" instead of what really matters, "economic status". That is, we are trying to help those who come from the same group as those most likely to need help, rather than simply helping those who need the most help. It is rather convoluted, and I have long said that rather than base special grants on race or ethnicity, we should base it on current economic status. So why don't we do this? I think much of the reason lies in the fact that it's easier to just look at race than to actually investigate someone's economic situation. All of that aside, I still think America is a great place. Regardless of where you come from, with hard work it is possible to go many places (I'm not going to say, "wherever you want", because that is a bit idealistic). I came from a divorced family in which neither parent made much more than $20K. I went to a public school in a generally lower-middle class rural area. I worked a minimum wage job for two years while going to high school and working hard to get all A's, and now I am reaping the fortunes of my hard work in the form of a tuition + $4500 per year for 4 year scholarship, and I'm able to go to school without any assistance from my parents. I've been paying for my own car/travel expenses since I was 16 and paying my own rent since I was 18. I'm not trying to brag, I'm just trying to point out that, even coming from a generally poor background, good grants available or not, it is certainly possible to work hard and get what you want. I may have been uninterested in high school subject matter (my major is now Computer Science, which certainly wasn't available in my high school), but I understood that it was something I had to do well at in order to make it to where I really wanted to go: college. So my advice to everyone (I'm sure you don't need it, Rodak, it seems that you have it figured out. This is mostly to the younger members.) is to set your sights on some goal, figure out what you need to do in order to achieve it, and then work as hard as necessary to put yourself where you want to be. If I can do it, so can you. [/motivation speech] [/lecture]

First to stay on topic, I'm:
25% English (My father's father came here from England after the second world war) 75% Canadian (My other grandparents have lived in Canada for many generations)
If you want to get technical I am part German, Native American (Iroquois), Welsh, and Scottish but not much of any one of them. I'm probably 45-75% English, as I come from a long line of English decedents.
As to Rodak's comment about Grants. I can attest to the fact that many grants in Canada are for Woman, Native people, and Asians; along with other visible minorities and handicapped people (physically and mentally). Note that these awards always go to the poorest or most needy people in each category, so it's not like economic necessary isn't part of the equation.
There are grants for all kinds of things out there if you look, it just depends on who's giving the grant. I have even seen one for Mature students (which we both quality for - although I didn't get it when I applied).
With so many needy students out there, I guess the grant provider needs to narrow it down so that people that are disadvantaged in other ways can at least have an advantage financially so that they can at least make it through University.
The fact is, there are already too many middle-aged white males taking up all the good jobs. It's sad that people look at it that way, but that's the way it is. Grants go to those that need it the most, and white males are at the bottom of the list of those in need. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

I do believe America to be among the best this world has to offer.
That does Not make it any good at all!
You can be in the best possible situation, and it can still suck.
My feelings are from many other factors too (HUD, etc).
It's the old Plutocracy / Democracy debate.
If they would just admit what they are doing...
But back on topic!
I reread my last post... I seem to have some pent up anger still.
Good.
I do not want to get over this! I will change The World!
Anger and Outrage are great motivators!!
Peace?

Is that what drove the other Rodak to world domination? But I do agree with you on many levels, it seems this country favors the wealthy over the middle class and under. I mean charging kids upwards of 30,000+ thousand dollars for college is something I don't think the founding fathers would be in favour of. But then again they were capping indians! *cough* slight joke. I'm only 17 so I may be politically incorrect, but looking out for my future I see the only oppurtunities are in favour again, for the wealthy, so they can continue that wealth. I want to do something big in life, and I don't want to settle for anything less. So maybe I should just suck it up and take loans, but being in debt is something I would like to avoid. Deciding my future is tough... But (back on topic kind of) me being a quarter blackfeet, and a registered native american, I can get grants for that.

Is that what drove the other Rodak to world domination? You all have a right to know why I have decided to conquer The Earth. Earth is the most beautiful planet I have seen. The other planets I conqured are barren and ugly. The Earth Must be added to my collection! It is useless to try to stop me. I shall send my Monsters to destroy your cities if you do nut surrender! Aww, I could not fool the board into attributing the quote to The Original Rodak! Oh well. But yeah, your heritage will work to your advantage. Do not hesitate to "play the race card" no matter how much it bugs you. If you don't you may find yourself dead ended like I did! And loans are not so evil when you are young... at my age it would be silly Good Luck!

100% Polish. My parents were born in Poland though both of my grandfathers were born in the U.S. So, somehow, technically, I'm 1st generation American, but I guess that could be argued. There was a family runor once that my paternal grandmother had some Czech blood, but we never looked into it.
Rodak, if you ever get that scholarship/grant fund going, I'll contribute. I personally loved your reasoning of being Asian because you are Russian. I actually feel kind of personally insulted that it didn't work for you.
I had a friend from high school, 3rd or 4th generation American, German descent. He was transferring colleges from RPI to Colgate after his first year and there was some kind of problem with him getting his transfer accepted to Colgate. He was sort of a reactionary kind of guy back then, but a smart one (maybe a smart-@$$ one would be a better term). I don't know all of the details, but I visited him a lot at Colgate once he got in, and he was always having to go to the Latin American Student Group -or something or other- meetings. When I asked him why he was in what seemed like a Hispanic group (I use group for lack of a better term), he said that he had to join because when Colgate started stalling on his transfer, he told them that they were discriminating against him because he was South American. Argentinian. He said that a lot of Germans immigrated to South America after WWII and said that his family had even though I knew it was B.S. I personally think that while Colgate wasn't afraid of the discrimination call, they were afraid to call him the grandson of Nazis.
The only type of scholarship I got for college was from the PNA (Polish National Alliance). I wrote them a letter once I had been accepted to film school and told them that I wanted to make a film about Lech Walensa, then the President of Poland), something in the vein of "Braveheart." They actually sent me $250.00. Of course, I spent most of it on malt liquor and cigarettes, but I did buy a Polish flag for my dorm room which I still have.
Though I started college with George Sr. *in charge* I guess I'm glad I finished school during the Clinton Administration.
By the way, (Rodak) I'm not the world's biggest "Public Enemy" fan, but if you can stomach it enough to give it a listen, check out their song "Son Of A Bush." I'm listening to it right now with a Belgian Wit while I plot my move to Poland.
