[white]I've talked to many people about the what I believe to be one of the best MMO games available, and I've convinced many people of this. Final Fantasy XI or Final Fantasy Online, as it is called and should, since I personally think it shouldn't have been given a number. So, I thought I'd share some of the details about FFXI with the rest of you.
The World of Vana'diel
The Kingdom of San D'oria
The Republic of Bastok
The Federation of Windurst
More details coming later...[/white]
Final Fantasy XI -- IMHO

The World of Vana'diel
- The game is divided into 23 servers the host the 1.5 million-ish clients of FFXI. Only 22 of these can be used by the players as the last one is for the testers and IT team for their experimentation and testing of new game features.
- I live on the Bahamut server, the third largest in game population at just under 30,000 characters. I say characters because a player can have more than one on his account. On average there are between 2000 - 3500 players actually signed on to my world.
- FFXI is now reaching its fifth year of existence. Many of the players have been on since the beginning and have the status to prove it. Almost anyone with a DSL or better internet connection can play since the game requirements are so easy to meet now.
- The world itself consists of three major countries. These three 'hub' nations are where new adventurers start their quests.
- There is a fully functional day/night/weather cycle in the game. The in game week features eight days, one for every major element and a full week passes in about one earth day. There are active tides and moon cycles as well.
- The environments are broken down into areas and regions. Regions are groupings of areas. Each area is its own little field where the landscape can vary from one area to the next. It's like Final Fantasy X or FFXII in that there is not 'world map' to explore, but instead they have separate zones. At first I kind of was disappointed by this, but after being chased my monsters and nearly dying many times, its nice to be able to 'zone' and save your skin.
The Kingdom of San D'oria
- The Kingdom is home to the Elvaan people of Vana'diel. Its the oldest of all the established cities in Vana'diel.
- Surrounded by a lush forest, San D'oria is the home for many starting warriors and monks seeking a way to strengthen there resolve and there skills.
- The native enemy is the orc, which inhabit an encampment not to far from the walls of the city. New adventures should be extra cautious should they come face to face with an axe swinging orc.
- I call San D'oria my home and prefer its simple design over the often confusing and eclectic styles of the other cities.
The Republic of Bastok
- Bastok is San D'oria's closest neighbor. A city designed around mining and technology, Bastok is the youngest of the major cities.
- Home to the ingenious and resourceful Humes and the large and powerful Galka, Bastok is set in a rough and arid mountain range south of the Grand Duchery of Jeuno.
- The head Blacksmithing and Goldsmithing guilds are located in Bastok.
- The local evil beyond Bastok comes from the turtle-like quadav. A potentially deadly creature.
The Federation of Windurst
- A true city of magic, Windurst is home to the mini sized Tarutaru and the cat-like Mithra.
- Founded from by the Tarutaru seeking refuge from the harsh life of men and elf its situated in the far south east edge of the central continent.
- The local government have a truce with the native beastmen tribe, the yugado. Although this truce doesn't seem to keep the bird-like yugado from attacking any wary traveler they come across.
