This is sort of a mini-project of mine right now being done on VX. Basically, it isn't going to be some huge epic RPG with a complex storyline or anything incredibly innovative. Its going to be a really simple game done in a Dragon Quest-style with a cliched story. It will focus on a few things:
*Balanced gameplay: One of the reasons I love DQ is the way enemies are set up. A problem that some RPGs fall into (especially on the indie scene) is that enemies move-sets just aren't varied and interesting. Usually, its just attack, elemental spell, etc. However, I'm planning on making battles a little bit more like DQ meaning that some enemies will have more interesting tricks up their sleeves, which will force the player to think a little more strategic than just: attack, attack, heal, attack.
*Class system: This will be a lot like DQ3's (and the current DQ9's) class system. You go to the tavern and recruit some party members, name them, and select their class. I'm still debating if I want to add a Dharma Temple-sort of place, though. Like I said, its not going to be a very big game at all.
*Map Making: This more along the lines of feedback from you guys. I want you to critique my maps. I doubt they're going to be incredible; like the rest of the game, they'll also be in DQ style (you can see the insides of some buildings from outside). However, I'd like you guys to critique the atmosphere I create within that style; stuff like foliage, the placement of various objects, etc.
I'm making this one point because I want to improve my map making skills for when I tackle my more serious project.
*Ruby Scripting: I have no troubles with this. However, I want to at least program a script or two and use them in-game since I haven't used scripting with anything practical yet.
*Just Want to Get a Game Done: Even if it ends up sucking horribly, at least I can say I completed a game.
I'm thinking this game will have around 3-4 dungeons or so. Even though its going to be very simple, my hope is that it can at least be moderately entertaining.
