This wonderful little device seems to have not come with a driver, rendering it useless on my computer. I tried to find one on the official site, but I couldn't. Any ideas on what I can do?

You do not need a driver. It is a "Flash USB" device and contains it's own driver which should be automatically recognized by your PC. After plugging it in to a USB port, open "My Computer" (if you are using Windows... if not, You are A Genius!!!), and look for a removable drive. That's it! For a detailed article on it's use Click Here. The same site has a PS2 file converter tool, so you can play games by folks who use other File Transfer Devices. If you still have trouble, ask more questions! Peace.

Well, it's inserted, but there's nothing new in My Computer. Also don't see a J drive like the guy in the FAQ has. There's a Max Drive program, but I don't know how to tell if it even did anything or not.

OK, I am going to ask some obvious questions here. They are the very basic most stuff I can think of that may be going wrong. And I can't think of any other way to help from here. Don't be offended if they seem too basic.
What operating system are you using? Does your PC meet the requirements on the Max Drive packaging?
When you say that a new program appeared, where is it? What is it? Did you insert the CD? That is not the max drive. The drive plugs in to a usb port. It should not install any programs. You do not need the CD except for the Playstation. The CD for PC's is just bonus jhunque.
What window of "My Computer" are you viewing? Can you see the A, C, and other drives?
If all of the above is in order, then you may have a faulty max drive.

There wasn't a computer specifications area on the package, but I have Windows 98 SE, which most programs are compatable with. The new program is called Max Drive.exe. I figured that was it, but I open it and I can't tell if theres anything I can actually do with it. I didn't insert the CD, I inserted the actual max drive into my USB port. I just opened My Computer. I see the A, C, and D drives, and then a bunch of folders related to networking, the printer etc. Also, I didn't insert either of the CDs it came with. Don't bother about offending me, either, it's actually very helpful because sometimes I miss something so obvious, I can't help but laugh that I didn't catch it before. Also, I haven't yet inserted the Max Drive into my PS2 (haven't really been playing it recently, either someone is using the TV, or I'm lying down because I'm sick) For all I know, whatever I did in the program already worked, and I just don't know it yet.

This may not be the problem, but I've often had to "jiggle" mine alittle in the usb slot to get the computer to recognize it. If nothing else follow this link and check Datel's FAQ site on the Max Drive where they have a direct link to contact customer support. Or, if the number is on the box, package, etc. then just call them and hopefully they'll know more than we do.

Another thing you might try is looking for updates to your USB driver for the USB slots on your computer. Since 98 SE is a bit old now I'm not sure how good of USB support it had. Also if you have a Pen Drive or know of someone who does try that out, or an external hard drive would work as well just to make sure that your computer will recognize external storage devices. Look at these two Microsoft Support pages 1 2 3. The first one is just an general overview of trouble shooting USB problems in 98 98SE and ME, the second one is a update you need to run USB if you have an AMD processor or a VIA USB bus, and the third one just explains how to check to make sure your USB slots are enabled and working properly. So check your comp first before assuming you have a faulty Max Drive. Also if you know your motherboard manufacturer, goto their site and see if they have an BIOS updates which deal with USB, or any driver updates to the USB bus, unless of course you have installed a USB PCI card, then look for updates to that. I can't remember if 98 SE had windows update or not, but if it does try that too.

as long as you have the software you can use any memory stick...so even if the maxdrive doesnt work you can use another stick =)

Well, I went into my control panel - system and it tells me the that Max Drive is there, I just need to figure out how to put stuff on it. Also, one of the guys mentioned a mini disk... I got the AR Max Evo version, so no minidisk came with it, but it looks like the Action Replay disk does the same thing. I figured out how to access the drive via the Playstation 2, but it said there was currently nothing on it. Edit: When I plug it into my computer and check the system, it shows up, but it says it has a problem. When I look at details, it says it needs a driver to use it.

This should help: www.pavilionboards.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1155I stress these lines!!! "now, even though the Max Drive software allows you to select and work with multiple files at once, it has a bad habit of completely corrupting your memory card when you do this. So just select and use one file at a time. Another note, never use the "move" command. this also has a bad habit of corrupting the memory card. Just stick to "copy"."

Well, I tried downloading the update, but it told me it didn't work with my version of windows, which apparently doesn't even know which version it is. Well, this makes me pertty upset. My computer says I must have a driver for the device, otherwise I put it in and nothing happens. Seeing as how I can't update my computer at all because it's a pile of crap, it looks like I just spent $40 on someting I can't even use. EDIT: My computer never ceases to amaze me. After several attempts to get the program to work, suddenly a new folder called Drivers just popped up out of nowhere. So I figured "Okay, I've tried everything else," and used that as the location for a driver install to my system. Apparently, it worked, because now my computer detects the Max Drive AND recognizes it, and it appears on the Max Drive program. ;D Thanks for the help again, guys.

I dont even have a computer! after seeing all this I wonder: Is this really something I can make work in a "cafe" situation? should I fork over the cash? Y/ n ?

If you do not have a PC, you may need to confirm that your Cafe will allow you to plug a USB drive in to their 'puter. Then find out if you can upload and/or download with it.
If so, no problem! The things you read in this thread are for a person with an old operating system. Cafes are usually more "up to date" than Windows 98 SE (no offense, Arter!).
It is ultimately up to you to decide.

Oh don't worry, I know my computer is an old, tired piece of poo. ;D Well, I figured out how to get stuff onto the Max Drive, but now I can't get it off! It's compressed on the MD but when I try to uncrush it to the memory card, it brings up a window that says "The Data already exists". I've checked over and over again and it isn't on the memory card, and there's more than enough room for the uncompressed file. This is really tiring me out...

odds are whatever your trying to decompress to your mem card has the slot on it already. ex, lets say your game is RPGM*Name*,(1), meaning your game save is RPGM2 game file 1, if you are trying to decompress it into your mem card with the same number, it will say that. Sometimes I get the same error and just keep re-trying and it goes *if what I said above isn't the case*

Well, what'd I'd do is load up your game save, and save it to a different number *this is going to require 2 open slots of RPGM2, which is about 4400 KB* then try decompressing

It's one of those things that only becomes obvious after someone points it out to you. That, or I'm one of those people who doesn't catch on to the obvious until someone points it out to them
