If you had to obtain an item, and all you know is that this item exists, how would you go about obtaining it? i mean, how would you find out its location, what you would need to find it, and so forth? what would your thought process be? how would you get the info?

Hmm, interesting. As the player I'd talk to the townspeople of the enwest available town, but if I WAS the character, hmm. A few ideas that would cross my mind would be: Ask an old wise man, a treasure hunter, or some old brainy scientist (or whomever else may know something) Go look for some books on it in a library and read about it Of course in real life both of these wouldn't do ****.

Well my common dungeon search method is Right middle left of the doors to enter, which depends on what door you enter from. So I'ld excavate the heck out of the last dungeon I unlocked. Then talk to all the NPC's I could. Check all things in buildings and houses and press action to everything in them etc... And if all else fails I consult the strategy guide if I have it or check online or ask a friend. Or if in RPGM2 then I spose I could consult the creator. As in real life I would look at e-bay :-)

im looking for more of a real life problem solver method. say you cant talk to sages/wisemen. you only have at your disposal the idea that the item exists. (btw, how would you know how to find said wise men? and the same with the dungeon?)
this is going to be a very analytical topic, so i hope you guys dont mind.
for example, if i want to know about something, i generally hit up google.
obviously this isnt a very developed process, but i dont want to influence yours.

Well... if we are talking modern world. 1: Look in the largest of resources. (ex: Google) 2: Look in a specific resource (ex: manual for ford car) 3: Talk to people related to the item in any way 4: Ask a large resource of people
If you are talking in some sort of medieval fantasy... I'd be more inclined to search in a secretive way. Hanging around in bars, searching for evidence, paying for information, and conducting non-official oficial investigations.

It would depend on what the object is. If it's something that can be made or bought, Ebay would probably be a good place to look. If it is an hystoric relic, then reading historic text books and searching for the information online (using several search engines) would be the way to go.
Finding the actual item may require a Raiders of the Lost Arc type of search, which, as any archeologist can tell you, can be a long, expensive, and often fruitless task.
You need to track down the last person who saw it and check the local legends in that area to find out where the item might possibly be. If no one has found it yet, then it must either be well hidden (buried) or in a dangeous spot (ex. The treasure of Oak Island). Once you get close, it is just a mather of trial and error until you either find it or give up trying.

it all depends on the importance of the item to me.
if its someting i must have, i'd have to use the "sneaking around/midnight meetings/buying information" strategy. if its something that isn't as important, i'd just say "screw you guys, i'm going home"
