hello
i've been a constant reader of these boards for quite some time now and i'm finally ready to unleash my demo onto the RPGM scene....
it's been a constant battle to keep things playable and working and i've finally got all the mechanics exactly (ok maybe not exactly) how i want them...
anyways....
i introduce to you... Scurvy Dogs..
a platformer unlike any other that's been done using the RPGM2 technology....
in my demo you'll be jumping, punching, and collecting your way through 7 levels, fighting your way to a boss battle...
i've put tons of work into this and i'm proud to say that it is (as far as i've tested; which is a lot) without any bugs... (ones that i can help anyway)
i hope you're all ready and willing to try out a new platformer made just for every RPGM2 fan....

Well, people...
thanks to the generosity of Doan, Scurvy Dogs is now up for your downloading pleasure....
so far i've gotten one piece of possitve reinforcement via Hedrum on the Pavilion boards....
Hope he doesn't mind my quoting him.....
I'm planning on trying to address his complaints some more tonight.... (they were things i'd had complaints about but they seem to have a lot more weight to them coming from fellow RPGMakers) so there may be a new version submitted to Doan's and the Pavilion's sites....
Hope you like it... and thanks for playing!

Hold back on that feed back....
Just a little while....
"Oh, no! I won't" you say...
Well I say.... (in old, asian accent) "Shhh... Don't spoit it! This works for the both of us..."
(Anyone? What movie's that from?)
Anyways.... I just sent Doan the updated version of my game with the little annoyance that the good folks at the Pavilionboards pointed out all patched up and ready for play!....
If you've already downloaded the game.... uhh... just wait a while for Doan to repost my game... I'm sure it won't take him too long.. (thanks)
Well, that's all for now.....
Gracias....

Well I got download it again i guess. Didn't get a chance to play the first one yet. Is the newest vers. at the pav for download? I'm interested in what you've done. I'll comment when I get the chance!

Yes, the new version of the demo is up at the pavilion.... there's no difference in the two except that the second has the jump system fine-tuned because I've been racking my brain for intricate and loopy ways to fix the problems i was having with it...... all to come up with a very simple way that works wonderfully....
Y, si... yo hablo un poco espanol.... estoy en mi segundo ano de espanol.... yo uso espanol hacer mis conversaciones interesante...

Ha, I was wondering what Mastodon was in spanish i guess... mastodon lol. Mi español es terrible por que no estudio mucho, pero mi ingleas es mui bien!
Second year eh? I could have taken spanish 2 but sided with chorus instead lol :-)
My vocab is pretty small in it, I understand conjugation and all that quite well. Except I can only do present tense lol.
~~~~ I have a pretty sweet jumping system in Zelda:Triforce, the teaser is available for download. Or you can check my board for videos. I think the first vid has jumping shown. You can jump anywhere, it works for jumping up to 16 high or across a gap, and knows not to let you jump to areas I don't want ya too. I assume yours is somewhat similiar.
Ok I played your demo till the end. Pretty fun, kinda short. I liked the environments even though they were relatively flattened like. The enemies were kinda blah though. And coulda do more like with power-ups, extra hearts etc.. or something. But pretty fun. And I was gunna add you to messenger after the game, figured your messenger name would be online...it isn't if ya want you can post it or PM it to me.
adious!
Hey! thanks!
I am overwhelmed with emotion by your enjoyment of my game, and I deeply appreciate yon critiques...
Yeeaahh..... anyways..
The environment's are kinda supposed to be flat.... it's a 2D platformer.... I know I could've created some things in the background... but there wasn't much I could've put behind the trees without it seeming out of place... I was planning to create better environments later in the game..
And the bad guys.... well....... that's just kinda do to laziness.... if I continue this title.... I'm sure I'll be able to mix it up a bit......
As far as power-ups go...... I have been thinking of doing some... but that was just the first world.... you can't expect any power-ups till at least after defeating the first boss..... and I don't think I'll have extra hearts as an option..
All these are strictly ideas for now, as my enthusiasm for the further development of this game is directly proportional to the enthusiasm with which others receive my game... and as of now they all seem positive... though there aren't many times when someone bashes someone else's RPGM game....
And as for AIM.... I've gotta redownload it... the stupid bugger keep f***in' up.... when I get it going I'll PM you... I'd be glad for another acquaintance.... (especially one I can speak RPGM2 with.. I don't have any of those)
Welllllppp.......
Adios..
I have three issues with it (but only two of them matter, ). 1) Whenever you jump onto a coin, you don't automatically pick it up, yet when you jump on an enemy, you die? This coin glitch also occurs with the teleporters; they don't activate when you jump onto them. 2) I'm stuck in the second level (can't figure out how to get to the upper area in the first half of it). Like I said, only two of these mattered, . 3) In the first level I tried moving into the background a couple of times. Here in the second level, three steps from the start, I'm able to move into the background. Once there, I jump to the right. Seeminly, I'm stuck in an otherwise unreachable area. By pressing down, I somehow move left (and uphill). By moving left, I wind up in the top of the palm tree. By pressing back, I'm able to go back, and then by jumping right (I'm doing this as I'm typing this post, mind), I'm now in the "blue area," assuming there's not already another term for it. Now, at first I'd thought you'd intended for some interaction with the background and foreground (which, in my opinion, adds a coolness to this game, as well as more puzzle opportunity). However, in this case, I presume I can say, "glitched'd"? Oh, actually, by going all the way to the left and climbing up the ledge that got me into trouble in the first place, I can get back into the level. I also confirmed that you can't jump forward or backwards (in the third-dimensional sense). And since the palm trees haven't helped me cheat my way to the upper area, I'm still lost. Or very stupid, on the off-chance half of this was intentional.
Poo...
Okay... well the coin thing's easily explained... as you can see the game itself isn't very complicated and is quite simply.... most of it was done when i was still really getting to grips with RPGM2.... the coins where done with simple EQUAL content scripts...... Technically I could make it so you could jump into them and get them..... but... to the best of my knowledge.. that would take a lot of Event and Party X & Z checking and calculating and such.... now, my thoughts and understandings of all the ways of doing things in RPGM2 are pretty simple... but, however this would be accomplished, it's too much for a lazy, good-for-nuthin' like me to do.....
Sense make it does?..... No.....
But Onward!
As for the second level.... What's that loud *SWOOSH* sound you hear?.... water you say?..... well..... pressured water shooting out of the ground sounds like a dandy thing to get you to the top level .... where you need to be.... (step into the water when it's rising... not when it's falling)
And.... well... as to your other comment.... I guess.... I'll just have to find a way to shut you up about that one..... what'dyou want?.... money?... girls?... how 'bout a bullet with your name on it?..... none of those?.... okay...
Well... all I can say is... Sorry..... You... I.. and everyone else here... have been...... "Glitched'd".... drats....
Yeah... was playing through my game the other day... and I also found another place similar to the one you found....... Goodness.. I honestly thought I'd covered all those buggers...... sons-a-guns.... it's okay.... I don't really think there's ever been a truly bug-free RPGM game... if there has been..... "Rats Off To 'Ya!"
Thanks for the words....
Your game.... I give it one and a half thumbs up. I liked the gameplay, but... I didn't like the jump. Its hard to get to certian areas just by jumping.
I could go for the money, actually.
Silly me, I tried jumping onto the water when it was coming up. I really should have thought about the programmatical logic behind that. I'll see if I can finish up the demo without getting stuck again.
Good luck pinning down all the glitched areas. Have you implemented the third-dimensional aspect of foreground and background, or are you even considering it? Like I said, including it in the game would be cool, and make for some trickier puzzles. It would also likely cause players to more quickly find the glitch areas.
I've got to say, the game's pretty fun. However, I have to agree with Nash about the enemies (so far, at least). The punch from behind is hilarious, but it's too easy at times to get caught by the enemy (and they don't even attack the main character). I think it was mentioned already about adding in special weapons or attacks or something, which would take care of that.
Oh, which reminds me. During the opening scene it was kind of hard to depict who was who because everyone was moving at once (and the ship was rocking on the waves). The back-story obviously isn't much of an important aspect at all, but smoothness is always nice.
agreements abound...
one and a half thumbs, eh?...... sounds painful....
yes... silly you... a platformer allowing you to jump into and activating an event?! PROPOSTEROUS!!!!... not at all... I had one of my testers (only) get stuck there cause he didn't think about just stepping into the water..... but trying to do that would just to unfeasible... cause the timing and such would all be crazy and.... man... my brain keep crapping on its own parade...
THREE DIMENSIONS?!! SINCE WHEN?!! HAVE ALL THREE ALWAYS BEEN THERE?!! HOLY BIJOLY!..... my mind's blown...
I like Modest Mouse.. anyone?
I have thought about using all of the D's in my game... but... if it ever happens... who bloody knows....
And, the enemies don't get any different.... all the same... cause me'sa lazy son-o-a-gun.... I'll change it up when I continue making the game.....
I think I'll let ole Pete stumble upon some "Stompin' Boots" to allow him to squish smaller enemies.... and other... things..
The opening scene..... um... yeah that was done so long ago and so crappily that.... I just don't worry about it too much... so.... neither should you.... maybe later..... lazy... poop....
Well.... I've gotta go and see about progressing in this big giant ball of yarn called "life".... my needle's somewhere out there....
And, like a great man once said... "Huh?"
Just tried out your game earlier today. Didn't realize you used my jump method until I saw the game's description at the pavilion. I had totally forgotten about that. I didn't play through the whole thing (had to stop and go to work), but I enjoyed this game. I think even more so than SD Paradise (the other big-name platformer). I probably won't finish the demo...might as well wait for the finished game. And I am looking forward to the finished game. So get it done.
AH! the opinion I was hoping for...
Approval! woo!
Sorry... self-esteem issues....
Glad you liked it...
I've got the house to myself today.. so I think I'm going to try and put a good bit of work into continueing my game.... creating basic levels should go by in a breeze now... I've got all the game mechanics how I want them... so I just have to create the custom elements for each level and each cutscene... hopefully things'll go smoothly...
Who knows when a full game will be done (or if)... I'm pretty finicky about how I work... lots of hours filled with no progress...
Those few screenshots that SD Paradise had had so long ago were what really got me wanting to make this... it was my inspiration to continue cause it was so well recieved and fawned over when it first came out... I got to play it not too long ago... you can see its dating... but it's still damn good...
Anywho... thanks everyone!
Well elmastodon... Scurvy Dogs! It was good. I liked the background. The jumping was Ok except the enemys were a pain in the butt to beat. I tried to kill the enemies but they killed me. Oh well all and all the game was ok.
Nice. My only major pet peeves were that the jumping could end up being extremely frustrating (large amount of times in which I attempted to jump forward and I spent several seconds jumping straight up) and the fact that the cannon could use a bit of an explanation (I've tried pushing the direction buttons in every way I could think of for this).
Glad you liked it... for the most part anyways..
The jumping wasn't right?... I'm pretty sure I addressed and fixed that problem.. I've had some members of my family try to play my game and they couldn't get the jumping down.... I can leap through the levels without any problem... of course... I made the dang thing.... it just takes a little practice and is all about timing...
What about the cannon?... you just jump in and it'll shoot you up to the necessary height and moves you over one block in which ever direction you were facing.... no button pressing necessary... maybe I'll expand the cannon mechanics later...
By the ways, everybooby.... I've started to continue production of Scurvy Dogs..... (only some invisible, all-powerful entity could guess when/if it will ever be finished..)
Thanks again...
Thanks. I was wondering about how to work it. That explains everything considering the fact that I just kept jumping into the cannon as I walked along the path.
Edit: Wonderful game. That boss fight had to be by one of the funnest, if not the funnest, games I've played on RPG Maker 2.
(Very sorry and a no offence to any SD fans.) But I always wanted to see a good platformer on RPGM2, but I still have yet to try this out!!! But I will give it a go tonight.
I hope you've downloaded the newest, fixed version of the game... there was a jumping issue with the first release that I thought was just something I would just have to deal with... but once other RPGM2'ers started complaining about it, I really kicked myself to figure out a way to fix it... and of course... it was both doable and easy....
I can't play it right now because I don't have the graphics or whatever program needed to play it...by the way, what do you need to play it anyway?
Post some pics so I can find out for myself what it looks like. I was trying to do something like that. But more like a "Super Smash Brothers" Type of game. Where can I find the jumping mechanics you used?
Its probably very good...so in advance I give it 4 stars.
