How many of you guys have a problem with the DBS(or MDBS with modifications to certain equations, etc)?
I was more or less asking more because I guess I find it annoying, but many games use an altered DBS, and it works for them, but I just can't stand anything dealing with it unless it has some outstanding work (such as DW's, Rodak's and Will's).

As long as someone put some type of touch to the DBS that's their own, I have no problem with it.

Well, yes. The DBS is boring and tedious. However, by modifying it to your own personal taste, it can be pretty fun.

I agree. Having an unmodified DBS just seems lazy to me. I mean, how many hours were spent on creating the rest of the game, only to leave the battle system untouched? Since a major part of the gameplay is the battling, having a crappy battle system can really detract from the game. I have a tough time playing the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) games because I just get tired of constantly mashing X (or A) to bypass all the annoying, unnecessary messages. I still like OgreNix's modification (from a few years back), where numbers popped up on the enemies showing how much damage they had received.

I made it for about one hour, and then the battles were just too much.

I beat fuma two or three times now, mostly as I liked the dungeon ideas and looks of them, but yeah, the battles were horrible. They got annoying right in the mushroom cave area.

I think the problem with FU-Ma's battles is that the programmers didn't do anything to make the battles interesting. Every fight was the same as the last. There is a whole priority system in the game that wasn't used at all. One of the things I like in battles is trying to figure out an enemies weakness and kill it as fast as possible before it kills you. This makes it more interesting when you enter a new area since you don't know what you need to do to beat the enemies at first.
I think with some creativity, you can make the DBS interesting. Just don't use all the preset stuff and expect a fun battle system. You need to create strengths and weaknesses for every enemy and have characters that are better against some types on enemies then with others. Just doing this, would make the battle system much better then it is.

And in addition to what Dungeon Warden said, unless battles are somewhat uncommon, battles should be relatively short. Nobody wants to spend 10+ turns on a random battle if they're going to run into another one in 10 more steps.

Well, yes, but that kinda applies to any kind of battles. I think even the coolest battles could get annoying if they were 10 steps apart.

I think its no hidden secret that I didn't modify the DBS for HH2. But I made a lot of vfx attacks, and changed the camera angle a bit, and I found it a lot more tolerable.
But yeah, I won't argue that it could have used a lot more work. That update I promised some time ago could get done in short time, but I get lazy when it comes to the DBS.

but I get lazy when it comes to the DBS. yeah, me too. personally, i can deal with the DBS, but i'd like to be able to change some things around. it's a matter of actually knowing what to do for me. in SS2 i'm trying to get an elemental cycle of strengths and weaknesses, and my skill system will be a little different, if that counts any. but yeah. i do get a little tired of the DBS. -the smurf

i honestly think it's easier to make a cbs rather than spend time modifying the dbs. that way, you know where everything's coming from. the dbs confuses me more.
