"Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC) - What's the difference from the first one?"
BIG difference. twice as many characters, and there's SO much more you can do. it can get kinda boring if theres no one else to play, tho.

From the reviews Civilization 2 seemed like it was the best. Has anyone played numerous Civilization games? And which one would you say is the best? I'm thinking I'll pick up #2 or #3.
___________________________________________
The bad thing about Smash Bros. Melee is that tons of characters are clones of others (almost exactly) where as the original smash bros. only had one near-clone (mario/luigi). Examples are: Marth/Roy, Link/Young Link, Ganon/Captain Falcon, Pikachu/Pichu, Falcon/Fox, Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario, and probably a few more I can't think of. The other negative is that the characters have become less balanced than the first (at least of what I've noticed). For fighting games I'd recommend Soul Caliber 2 first, and then Smash Bros., Smash Bros. Melee, and Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore (or #2 or #3). ;D
I'm thinking I'll try Suikoden 3, but maybe wait and see if anyone else has anything to say for a bit. Thank you!
I'm thinking I'm going to pass on Advanced Wars. Reading over those clips from the review scares me too much.
FF1/2, FF4, and BoF2 I'll get. Even if they're not incredible they'll be interesting to play.
Yeah!! ;D ;D The Lords of Magic sounded like Brigandine when I read all the reviews. I'll bet I'll enjoy it quite a bit.

I don't know why Civilization 2 would have higher ratings than the other one...Civilization 3 is a complete upgrade, all the same stuff and more. I've been a fan since I played Civ 1 like 10 years ago. In my opinon, just buy three, it's got everything the other two have and more.

ive been playing civ since the first one, and i think that 3 is by far the best. its got a higher learning curve, but the detail in the game is outstanding. moving on to some of your questions:
you know, i never got dark cloud 2. dark cloud 1 was too monotonous for me, so i skipped two.
final fantasy 1 story is horrid, and you will probably have to be very focused to make it through the game. however, ff2 is awesome. great development system and such. leaps and bounds from the first. ff1 is a great game because it takes you back to your roots, and its quite challenging. and well, it comes packaged with 2, so you cant exactly pass on it, can you?
...i dont remember which one 4 is. however, i suddenly realized that no one suggested ff6! its one of the best games in the final fantasy series.
i am personally a pretty big fan of the arc the lad games. i havent played the newest one on ps2, (which is like the 4th in the series) and i hear there coming out with another one. they are very clean games, very epic stories, and, in my opinion, very well written. they share common ground with both classic rpgs and strategy rpgs. you can get the full arc the lad collection, which has the first three games, for psone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
hmmm... advance wars: i liked advance wars. it is a little frustrating at times. i like challenging games, so i liked it. I thought it was a beautiful game for the game boy advance, and allows advance tactics very well. it is honestly alot like command and conquer, but slower paced. the enemy wont pounce on you. they usually slowly make there way over, and mass a large force. the ai is exceptional. they use alot of tactics that you wouldnt expect the ai engine to build.
this is a very true statement. now, about cloud of war. ive always thought that cloud of war was the only true way to play a strategy game that simulates full warfare. fft and to were fine, because you were dealing basically w/ skirmishes (maybe not all of to, but you know the point) where it makes sense that you would see all of their resources. these things dont make sense in large scale strategy games. the cloud of war definitely adds a challenge, but it is one i honestly enjoyed.
so in closing, i guess it is a pretty challenging game. it is one you have to pay attention to. its like chess. with long range attacks, and where you cant see the enemies pieces. and where they can hide in the woods. (if a unit is in the woods, you cant see them unless you are right next to them, like in total war). i liked it alot. if your not extremely focused on your games, you should pass this one up.
just out of curiosity, which games were these?
actually, i owned one sims game before it. the first one for ps2, which pales in comparison to sims2. i enjoyed the one on ps2, and wanted to get sims1 for pc, but got sims2 for christmas. i actually have sims1 now as well, because someone gave it to me. ive never played it though. let me tell you a little about sims2:
first, im going to talk about simcity4. why you say? because if you have simcity4, you can design your own neighborhood layouts, using the maps there. if you dont have simcity4, you use the preset layouts (which arent limited), and place your own lots. this means that, you decide where the big houses can go, and so forth. its really hard to explain if youve never played a sims game before. think of the layout as a background picture. thats all it really is. its where the roads go and such. lots are building areas. you decide how big the areas are. then of course, you can build on them. you can build multi level houses, restraunts, grocery stores, and so forth. then you design the people. you can build families, or just have single people. you determine these peoples personalities, quirks (are they neat or clean) and aspirations (what do they want to do in life). and of course look. sims2 actually comes with a way to import custom clothes, and a very detailed sim editor, so you can make these people look very specific.
from there, its basically a giga pet on steroids. you have to make them bathe, eat, and improve in lots of skills. you also make friends for them (even significant others, which they can marry), get jobs for them, and basically tell every part of their life. of course, just like giga pets, you can be mean and torture your sims too, and even kill them. (they also age, so eventually they die anyways). they have short term goals based off of the aspiration that you chose for them (there are six aspirations: money, fame, family, romance, and two others....) and fears (things they dont want to happen) based off of them as well.
i just got the university expansion pack, which opens up all sorts of other doors. now they have to make good grades, pay for college, declare a major, and gain 'influence' (getting to the point to where they can manipulate other people) and join frats and sororities (neither of which seems to be gender specific for whatever reason?!) and other such things. it also opens up some new career choices. which is something every sim has to do. there are some shady careers (burglar) some normal careers (military, actor) and some wierd careers (paranormal?!). its really a great game, open ended, and very addicting. if you like it when you start, you may be playing it for years to come.

Civ 2 is (and civ3, for that matter) a very ... expansive game. there are many different routes to go. you can go the technology power house route, the warlord route, or the economic guru route. it all depends on how you want to develop your country. there can be very good or very poor tactics involved, depending on how smart you want to be (you can just swamp them with men, or you can actually plan your battles) or not fight battles at all. it is made by the same guy that did age of empires, but it is a completely different entity. in this game, you deal with economy on a very personal level, crop management, town placement, defense, offense, trade, foreign relations, research and development, and tons of other areas of managing a complete society. you have to keep the people happy as well. the units are fairly balanced, except that not only do you get special unites based on what you research/build, you also get them at different time periods, which adds a whole new level to tactics. (as in, you probably dont want to attack a society if they are in the era with there special unit and your not) some people will have special units in the early ages of the game, some in the technological age. the important thing is that the age your society is in depends on you. what decisions you make will advance your society at a certain pace. its possible to have planes during bc. as far as the battlefield goes, its square panels, but you can attack at angles, so you get eight squares of available attack. with different options to fortify positions (digging in) and blocking roads and trade routes, elite unites and veterans, the tactics can get quite engrossing (if you dont have a tactical mind, dont get 3! its hard) dues ex: www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/itemsearch.aspdues ex is a fps with some rpg elements. its long. its got alot of weapons. its not bond. its not halo. its not medal of honor. im not sad i bought it. if you want more details after readin those reviews, let me know. ill write something more formal up. actually, battle bots is old. it didnt catch on well. it is something like the comedy central show (i was thinking it came on the discovery channel). basically, you build a robot, out of general household stuff, and try to beat the other robot. its not the greatest game, but it provides a little challenge at times, and will keep you occupied when you cant focus soley on the game, but have nothing better to do. i used to play it at work. i wanna say it has a pvp capability too, but im not sure. one final note on civilization: it goes so far as to allow you declare what type of government you have (republic, democracy, monarchy, despotism, communism, fundamentalism (3 doesnt have this)) and this has an affect on tax rates, peoples happiness, soldier deployments, and other things. if you are a democracy, you have to have congress declare war before you can attack, and they can also over ride you and sign peace treaties. and the people get upset when troops are deployed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ i had to do this in two posts because it said it was too long...

Thank you SO MUCH Ves and everybody!! You've all been an incredible help. One question for Dues X, is it slow-to-the-point where your skill maxes out very quickly like Halo? If it helps, I like Time Splitters 2 the most as far as fps's go. I forget most of the ones that made me cringe. One was an fps that didn't allow the player to turn off auto-aim. Another was an fps where the left joystick controlled horizontal aiming and moving around and the right joystick controlled vertical aiming. That's all I remember. Oh yeah, one was also the Advanced Wars stuff (not as much, but did hurt to read). edit: I went and read over the list and I think those were the only ones. Here's my new list. Definite Buy___ Valkyrie Profile (PS) Legend of Legaia (PS) Ogre Battle: Person of Lordly Caliber (N64) Suikoden 2 (PS) Lords of Magic: Special Edition (or non-special edition) (PC) Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS) Xenogears (PS) Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (PS) Tenchu 2: Wrath of Heaven (PS) Secret of Mana (SNES) Arc the Lad Collection (for 1/2) (PS) Mario Party 3 (N64) Mega Man Collection (PS2) Probable Buy___ Sims 2 (PC) Final Fantasy 4 (SNES, PS) Breath of Fire 2 (SNES, GBA) Super Metroid (SNES) Civilization 3 (PC) Jet Force Gemini (N64) King’s Quest 6 (PC) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PS) Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen (PS) Suikoden 3 (PS2) Ratchet and Clank (PS2) Paper Mario (N64) Wild Arms (PS) Saga Frontier 2 (PS) Grandia 2 (PS2) Grandia (PS) Lufia 2 (SNES) Alundra 2 (PS) Alundra (PS) Final Fantasy 1 / 2 (SNES, PS) Harvest Moon 64 (N64) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) Questioning___ Dark Cloud 2 (PS2) Breath of Fire 5 (PS2) Dues X (PS2, PC) Rent/Wait___ Tales of Symphonia (GC) Super Smash Bros. So far I've got Valkyrie Profile and Lords of Magic: Special Edition (w/Urak Quest Pack). Valkyrie Profile is the strangest game ever, completely unprecidented, very bizarre. Lords of Magic is strange too, but not nearly as much. Both have been fun so far.

how far are you on valkerie profile? i thought the further into that game, the wierder it became. listening to slain spirits, reaping the dead, preparing for war in the heavens... i wonder how they thought of it.

I'm toward the end of Chapter 3. I'm getting to understand it more, but the story has some bizarre things that can be hard to follow.
