I heard that the Fighter Maker series in general, was horrible. But I've never even actually seen it, so I have no opinion myself.
I've never even heard of the other one.

I've tried Fighter Maker 2, and didn't like it, personally. From the back-of-the-box description, I kind of assumed that each player would be able to pick out a character, choose their appearance/costume/personality, set their stats, pick out a couple of custom attacks/finishing moves, and then pit their fighters against each other.
Unfortunately, it's not like that at all. What I didn't understand is that you literally animate everything from the ground up. Customizing your character's appearance isn't TOO hard (I wasn't terribly impressed with the variety, though) but that's about as far as I got. Your character will literally just stand there and get the crap kicked out of him until you animate each and every one of his actions, frame by frame. And, as far as I could find, there aren't even really any presets that you can use.
So, if you're into animation and have a lot of patience, it might be cool, but other than that, I wasn't too terribly impressed.

you got to have patients with fighter maker 2. and u can create fun moves.
magic pengel is good if u like to draw you're own characters and use them in turnbased battle which is easy

horribly, horribly wrong. there are probably around 150 premade moves that you can assign your character.
Fighter Maker 2 is awesome.
some examples: I made a turtle jesus. how cool is that? he could fold up into his shell and do a spinning attack.
I made a fighter that is constantly attacked by an angry (and completely invisible) ghost during battles. while throwing a punch, her arm may get twisted back, while doing a jumping kick her head may suddenly be twisted back 180 degrees and she'll fall to the ground lifeless for a few moments. during a throw, she commonly comes under a barrage of attacks and end up being thrown across the arena, or being contorted into a square, or losing her head entirely (by hiding it, and other body parts inside her body).
Fighter Maker 2 is awesome for twisted individuals. my favorite character is homo dan, who does things not suitable for discussion on this forum.

there are probably around 150 premade moves that you can assign your character. Hm... I guess I stand corrected. To be completely fair, I spent a couple of hours trying to animate some simple attacks, but didn't have the motivation or enthusiasm to take it much further than that. I saw all of the preset fighters, but was unaware that it was possible to apply preset moves to custom fighters. An instruction manual and a bit of patience probably would have come a long way in my case. I'd still advise renting it first, though... like RPMG2, it's probably not for everyone.

It eats up a lot of memory and all you get to make is 8 fighters to fight each other (that's it, no possible story mode, team mode, etc. to make, just 8 fighters). It's much, much less powerful than RPGM2 (and RPGM1), and I'd recommend waiting to see how Soul Caliber 3 turns out, or just forgetting Fighter Maker 2 all together.

That last post lost ALL of my interest right there. Seems like it would get old in about 15 minutes.

HAHAAA!!!! Hey Valk I made a Ninja Turtle in my game and had a bunch of shell attacks too. Like the block and dadge things were all going into your shell, and you could also sit on the ground and spin in your shell and stuff it was awesome. I did the 4 colors for the character models too.

alright, so no fighter maker for me, it seems like too much work.
magic pengel looks quite cool, but i can't find it at ebgames or ebgames.com (grr) and agetec's site doesn't give a good description.

You know what's funny? That's what you can do. Fighter Maker 2 doesn't require as much as RPG Maker 2 in terms of patience and work, in fact, very little is required if you know what you're doing. You can make your own fighter from scratch, but you can also easily make a full fledged fighter in 2 hours using preset moves. And with a little tweaking, you can make little changes to make your fighter your own. It's not as bad as some make it out to be. It does get boring after a while, but that's usually because most people don't share their creations and pit them against one another. If you like making your own 3D fighters, this will be a worthy purchase. And I bet Soul Calibur 3 won't be as flexible as Fighter Maker 2, not even close. If you've played games that claimed to have customization in a certain aspect on a console game, you'll know what I mean.

Check out the magic pengel review for more info on the game. I heard it was a fun game with a few problems that cept it from being great. There is a new version coming out soon that is suppost to be much funner to play and with a better story. I think it is called Pengel Kingdom or something.

You know what's funny? That's what you can do. Yeah, I'm feeling pretty smart... I played with the game for a couple of hours, and never realized that the presets could be transferred to custom characters. I guess what I meant was that back-of-the-box description made it seem incredibly easy, and the way I was imagining the game before I played it, each player just went through a couple of quick menus to select their fighter's basic appearance/strengths/moves. I didn't figure itd take longer than ten minutes to make a fighter (sort of like The Sims or something, I suppose), and I was kind of under the impression that the main premise of the game was pitting your created fighters against each other, testing out different strength combinations and so on, but I should have known better... the game is called Fighter MAKER, after all. Oh, well... like I said before, if you're even moderately interested, at least give it a chance. Rent it, borrow it from someone else, whatever. I don't want to turn people away from a game I haven't really spent a lot of time with, I just wanted to share my personal experience/initial reaction.

Yeah, I'm feeling pretty smart... I played with the game for a couple of hours, and never realized that the presets could be transferred to custom characters. I never noticed that either, until I saw a move one of the presets did. I was like "That's so awesome! Maybe I can cut and paste it...". And lo and behold, I GOT IT!!! Now I do it all the time, and making a fighter is much more fun(especially when you can make UMK3 style auto combos). I think everyone here should at least rent it, you may like some of the clothing options on characters. It's too bad you can't have custom fighters in the arcade lineup though.

"It's too bad you can't have custom fighters in the arcade lineup though"
see here, this is what i think the game should be about (from what i heard i'm guessing it isn't).
it should be an actual fighter game creator, similar to RPGM and RPGM2. like you create the characters and stages and arcade lineups and stuff. going by the reviews here, it doesn't seem like something i'd like if all you do is make fighters to fight your friends with...

If you want a 2D fighter making game, MUGEN is great for that. I once had 100+ characters on the select screen in that game. lol

MUGEN moved to Linux development(VERY bad move) and was supposedly discontinued by Elecbyte, and Windows patches have been released. However, it's just a shell of its former self now.
