I finally figured out how to use the Screen Monkey program and have a short adventure we can play. I was wondering who wanted to play and how you wanted to create your characters. After answering the poll, post a note about your character idea (if you have one).

I'd make my own, but which rules are you talking about?

I don't know what the options mean, but I'd make my character a Paladin. Others than that I don't know what to say.

I'd make my own, but which rules are you talking about? I'll be using D&D Third Ed. so you need a copy of the rules to make your own character. Here is the options in more detail: DM makes your character (specify type): name a fantasy style chapter you would like to play, giving as much detail as you wish. Details like race (elf, human, dwarf, etc.) and job class (Paladin, warrior, thief, mage, etc.) are helpful. Make own character (DM makes stats): Do a write up about your character without any regard for the rules. I'll try to fit the character into the rules. Make own character (have the rules): If you have the players handbook 3rd Ed. and know how to play, you can make your own character. You'll have to give me your starts if you use this option. Surprise me (don't care what I play): If you don't know what an elf is or you're willing to play any character type, I'll make a character that will fit in with the goup (ex. if no one can heal, I'll make a cleric for you so someone can heal the party). Other option: If someone has another idea for making a character, I'd like to hear it.

I say 'Make Own Character (DM makes stats)':
Name: William Class: Paladin Race: Garden Gnome ;D... okay, Human Background: An old warrior who's fought in lots of battles, and doesn't care for much anything anymore because of all the tragedy he's seen. He's become a hard-ass because of what he's seen and been through, and if someone bitches to him about something stupid he'll bitchslap them across the face. It's assumed he was normal when he was younger, but it's still hard to imagine him being sensitive to anyone. Stat Summary: He's uncharismatic and unenthusiastic, but skilled in fighting, and can be helpful with healing too. He's a horrible negotiator and has poor people skills. He's smart for a warrior, but not compared to a magician.
(Is this about what you want?)

Haha...that's a very different version of a paladin than I have thought of them.
Name: Saire Bloodbane Class: Fighter Race: Human (infernal, if that's acceptable) Background: A man who was stolen from his home as a child and forced into slavery for an evil necromancer. At the age of fifteen, he escaped and attempted to live life with a woman that he fell in love with. They had two children, and as he was out journeying they were murdered. Afterward a demon rose from the darkness of the ash of his burned home, and offered to merge with him to avenge his family. He has lived as a mercenery and bounty hunter ever since. He is cold, brutal, and extremely efficient.

dw, it may be easiest if you establish a point system, and explain the six different stats. if youre making it fit, your going to have to have alot of details. like familiars, mounts, feats... the list goes on.
in any case, if we are making our own, points or rolls, and if points, how many?

Name: Brandon Class: Swordsman Race: Human Background: He is very rebellious and does whatever he feels like without any regard of what may happen to himself, but he is very honorable and hates to see others oppressed by wickedness. His rebellious nature comes from when he was a child, before he understood what honor meant. What pushes him to fight is his younger brother, Wyatt, who was kidnapped by his rich uncle.

For this test game, I though I'd just make first level characters with basic skills and feats. If people have a particular kind of character ability in mind I'll fit it in but I want to keep things simple. I suppost it would be easier if people gave info on all six stats. They are: Str: physical power Dex: Quickness or agility Con: Tough and resistance to abuse Int: knowledge and logic Wis: intuitiveness and common sence Cha: ability to influence others (includes attractiveness, manners, and confidence) You can divide 72 points between the six stats if you want to make your own (no number above 18 and it costs 2 points for every number above 15 (ex. a 15 costs 15 points, 16 cost 17 points, and an 18 costs 21 points). Racial adjustments are applied after all points are spent.

All the feats having to do with people skills he'll suck big time at. Others than that I don't know.

These are my stats:
Str: 17 Dex:10 Con: 16 Int: 10 Wis: 10 Cha: 6
I noticed they look similar to Will's. lol. But since we're different classes it should make for very different characters all the same.
If you need more than this just let me know.

William Kirk;
There is just one little problem with your character - Paladins need CHR. Many of their special skills and abilities use this stat and Paladins are known for their ability to influence others.
I suggest you either give yourself a higher CHR (12+) and change the characters background, or you make a fighter what used to be a paladin in his youth but lost his powers because of events in his past. People may still call him a paladin even though he no longer acts like one. It's up to you.

Okay, what all the possible classes?

Post by Dungeon Warden on May 16, 2005 12:50:22 GMT -5
I don't want to give detail on every possible class since it is possible to make any character imaginable. But for the sake of simplicity I'll list the main types:
Fighter - Main stat: Str. Can use any weapons or armor. Can specialize in a particular weapon.
Paladin - Main Stat: Cha. Uses most weapons and all armors. Can heal, turn undead, and inspire confidence.
Ranger - Main Stat: Dex. Can use two weapons at same time and hide in wilderness settings if in light armor, but can wear any armor. Gets bonuses againsts some enemies.
Barbarian - Main Stat: Con. Uses most weapons and natural armor (hide or leather). Dangerous in battle but unfamiliar with civilization.
Rogue - Main Stat: Dex. Master at aquiring treasure (pick locks, hide, find/ deactivate traps, hide in shadows, listen, search, etc.)
Bard - Main Stat: Cha. Part thief, part entertainer, and part sorcerer. Good all around character but not strong in any one area.
Cleric - Main Stat: Wis. Healer and protector. Most parties can't survive without at least one cleric. Can use most armor but weapons are limited to blunt ones [some exceptions].
Druid - Main Stat: Wis. Similar to a cleric although with limited healing abilities but gains powers from nature. Can't use metal weapons or armor but spells can make up for this.
Sorcerer - Main Stat: Cha. Has a natural talent to use magic and doesn't require the amount of studying a Wizard requires. Can use simple weapons, but no armor.
Wizard - Main Stat: Int. A master of magic but limited in physical skills. Can only use clubs, daggers, crossbows, and staffs. Can't use armor of any kind.
Races:
Human - Good all around character. No adjustments
Dwarf - Short but tough. +2 Con, -2 Cha
Elf - Smaller then humans but light and agile. +2 Dex, -2 Con
Gnome - smaller then Dwarfs and weak characters. Some natural illusion abilities. +2 Con, -2 Str
Half-Elf - Similar to humans but have elvish features. No adjustments.
Half-Orcs - Stupid, ugly brutes. They make good barbarians. +2 Str, -2 Int, -2 Cha
Halflings - The smallest of the standard races. They are weak but quick and hard to hit. +2 Dex, -2 Str

Only three people have given me characters so far. Does anyone else want to play?
I'd like to do a test to make sure everyone can get into the system. What is a good time to get together for 10-15 minutes? I'd also like to know what people's schedules are like so we can set up a time to actually play the game. Post which days and hours are best for you. We will probably play 1 to 1.5 hours at a time. The first adventure I have is very short, so it shouldn't take more then a couple of hours to get through. We'll see if people still want to keep playing after that.

My schedule is kind of limited to late night. 9 PM-Midnight Eastern is usually when I'm on. I guarantee I'll be on by 10 every night, usually at 9.

Late at night is fine with me. Once I hear from Sousuke (and anyone else that wants to play) we'll set up a night to test the connection and then we can start playing.
[Edit] I still haven't heard from Sousuke. I sent him a private message but he never replied. I was hoping there would be more then two people playing. When we first mentioned the idea many people said they wanted to try it. So, hey, here's your chance. I'm planing a short , easy game to start out. If people like it, I have longer adventures to play. If people don't like it, then we never have to play again. I would at least like to try it and see how it goes.
So far all the characters are warrior types. Anyone want to play a less combative role (bard, cleric, or acrobat)?

Yeah, the upgrade sort of put this idea on hold for a while. I was hoping to hear from a few more people as well since it would be nice to have at least 4 people who are willing to play. Don't worry about never playing the game before. I plan to run a short game to help people learn the basics of game play and combat. If you really want to know how to play the game. The d20 system rules for D&D can be found in the System Reference Document. There is a lot of information about the game here. You might want to stick to the basics, the classes, and combat. Once you've played the game, the rest of the document will make more sense.
