This is more of a general PS2 question, but it's hindering my RPGM2 progress, so I thought I'd see if anyone has ever had similar problems, or any ideas...
I bought a second-hand PS2 over the weekend for a pretty good price; it was supposedly tested and has a 90-day-guarantee. Like I posted earlier, my game save is on my Max Drive, so that's the first thing I try to load... the Max Drive software disc.
"Disc Read Error."
Odd. So, I try to load RPGM2.
"Disc Read Error."
Bahh. Well, to make a long story short, I can get RPGM2 to load about a fourth of the time, and I've yet to be able to get the Max Drive software to load at all. (It's definitely the right disc; I triple checked.) And just to make sure, I tried both discs in a friend's PS2, and they both worked fine.
Any ideas as to why my PS2 won't load games properly? Is there something I can do as far as maintenence/cleaning, or should I just call the video game store and try to get them to honor the 90-day warranty and swap it out?

You can contact Sony and they might repair the PS2 for you, but that takes time and more effort than simply getting in touch with the game store. I definitely recommend using the 90-day guarantee. The store is sure to have heard about the DRE and if they give you trouble about returning it, they are real jerks.

Thanks... I just called the video game store, and they said they'd replace it under the warranty. So, until I get a chance to get into the city, I guess I'll be doing a lot of resetting, but at least I can play around with RPGM2 a little bit until then.
(I just noticed a similar topic in "Domain Chatter" with a bunch of replies, so if you want, just trash this one... )

If it's the common 'Disc Read Error' problem Sony will fix it for free under warranty or not. Their number's 1-800-345-SONY. The problem is that if it is this it'll keep happening and you'll have to keep sending it to them to get it fixed. The first few years-worth of PS2's are like this, but he ones after a certain time (I think Version 4) don't have this problem. I myself am boycotting PS3 out of vengeance... and incredible fear of Sony's secret desire to kill all that is good and decent in the world.

If you can request the 39001 model PS2 from the store if they got one. These models never get DRE's and run perfectly 99.99999% of the time. I love mine. I've even dropped it (from a small height mind you, and never on purpose) a couple times and it still works perfect.

Until you get your new one, try standing your current one on edge.
That helped my dying one immensley before it started happening again and I had to get a new one.
Good luck with it.
Peace.

Ugh...the evil "Disc Read Error"...
I've had this problem 3-4 times, can't remember exactly.
But, they've fixed it for free every time.

I checked my model number last night - it is a 39001, but apparently one that wasn't taken all that good of care of. The Disc Read Error is the only problem I've had, though; everything else runs great. I did try standing it on end, and it read RPGM2 after one try (which was a vast improvement) and the Max Drive software disc after about twelve tries (another vast improvement - it was the first time that it read it.) But, one time was all I needed for the Max Drive, which means... I'VE GOT MY GAME BACK!
So, this'll at least do until I get mine switched out... thanks for all your suggestions, everyone!

mine is a scph-39001 model as well. I have to open/close it like 5 times for it to read RPGM2. Good news is it's 99.99999% that RPGM2 is just HEAVILY scratched , as all other games run perfectly, even HM, STHL (blue bottom as well).
