I’m near the very end of Xenogears and wow, just wow. This game’s simply awesome. I’m currently listening to a midi file of My Village is Number 1 (One Who is Torn Apart happens to actually be my favorite). Emotions certainly does go by its name.
Going away from common opinion, I actually like the second disk over the first one due to more longer and better (Opinion) story sequences (I personally loved the flashbacks the most). Unfortunately, especially at the beginning of the second disk, their budget cut was showing. It’s extremely obvious that Rico was meant to have more character development (it’s even obvious when this was supposed to be), a few characters completely disappeared, they pretty much forgot a few of the main characters (Maria), the gear battles lack tactics, the forcing of the metaphors caused an eye roll at times, and of course there’s the infamous “Chu-sification” (if the scenes immediately after it weren’t so good, it’d be hard to take the game seriously after that).
However, it ended up being an overall unique and greatly enjoyable playing experience. I’m one of the few people who didn’t mind the platformer elements. I also don’t recall seeing the combo system ever used quite like this in an RPG and some of the deathblows look like they came right out of the Matrix. They actually managed to make guns one of the most effective weapons so that you’ll actually want to use them.
I don’t think much has to be said about the story. Most people who’ve heard of this game already know that it’s the main drawing points of it. I’m personally neither a fan of Freud’s or Nietzsche’s philosophical viewpoints (In fact, I despise the latter) but I can still appreciate how they were beautifully placed into the characters of Id and Lacan. I do wish that they could go back and redo the second disk (they told the story in boring narrations at the beginning, though I admit you get used to it) but all in all, it was a wonderful presentation and it probably contains one of the greatest stories in video gaming if not the greatest. It (You didn't really think I could go out without a pun of some kind?), "Stands and shakes the heavans" (that wasn't so bad, was it?).
