Just wondering what kind of battle systems you all perfer, now i do realize that it could depend on how the battle system is pulled off, like FF1 was a basic Turn based, but FFX had a effect like Turn base, but just at itself, what's your favorite/what do you perfer?

I guess I prefer the old turn based style. This allowed you time to plan strategy or to just attack and end the battle quickly (depending on the enemy). That's not to say the other systems aren't enjoyable as well. As you say, it really depends on other factors (like what options you have and how tough enemies are).

I am the one who voted "other" because I've always felt the battle system was not of primary importance and the one feature that I really like in a battle system has only been done in a few games I've seen.
I like to be able to use than pause button anytime, including battle. I usually do more than one thing at a time and sometimes play games in the background. Without a pause button in battle I can't do that!
I guess traditional turn based systems work because you can just walk away and nothing progresses without you, but the music keeps playing and if I wanted to pause it to do something like answer a phone, I prefer it to shut up!
That won't help with RPGMaking, but it's what makes a game less obtrusive for me.
Peace.

um, rodak, this poll was just a simple "whats your favorite battle system" questionaire, not what makes a good video game....
I enjoy the Real Time myself.

Hands down Tactical! Tactical lets you get massive numbers of characters, a massive number of classes, great storyline (usually) and even lets you get "overly powerful characters" who don't make the gameplay unbalanced, where a single overpowered character can ruin a traditional RPG. With the supercharged characters fitting well with the balance, Tactics Ogre is a perfect example. Some of the characters were way better, most of them were average, but it still kept the game challenging. A bad example (but a great game all the same) is Final Fantasy Tactics, where the balance was wonderful until Orlandu came in and made everything his bitch. Although, it was still fun if you kept bringing up your job skills, and not really looking for a challenge. Had to let that out someplace, and this thread was begging for it.

I have to go with the old school turn based system. I grew up on those. I was rather clumsy as a kid, so I wasn't very good at things like Mario Bros. It was mainly because I was raised as a righty, but I'm actually a lefty. Now that I'm older, and accustomed to... myself...I guess, I can get used to action based things. Nowadays, I've gotten to like real time battles a bit more thanks to the Tales of Destiny series, and Zelda: OoT. But still, old school. Hands down.

I voted tactical because I usually like that more. My next would be the FF7 one. The thing with the FF7 one is that it -really- matters how fast it goes. For say, FF5, FF8, and FF9 went -painfully- slow and ruined the system, where as FF4, FF6, and FF7 made it go much faster and feel more actionous. Basically, this is why I went with tactical, but the FF7 one can be -very- fun.

um, rodak, this poll was just a simple "whats your favorite battle system" questionaire, not what makes a good video game... Sorry, I guess I misunderstood your first post.. I thought " i do realize that it could depend on how the battle system is pulled off" encompassed my thoughts. Scratch one "other" vote then. My indifference to battle systems overrides in that case. I should not have voted. Peace.

oh, sorry. by 'i do realize that it could depend on how the battle system is pulled off', I meant that depending on how the battle system functions, and what options are available to the player *as DW stated* can help. I apologize if it seems i have insulted you or anything like that. if I missed a type of battle system that you feel should be worth on the list, that is what the 'other' button was for, or what i was originally aiming for, if you vote 'other', just post the battle system and explain

tales of symphonia battle system...so that would be...real time?
whatever it is, you actually get to move and stuff...as opposed to an unrealistic sit and let them attack you, then they sit and let you attack them. not that i'm against turn-based, but i prefer real-time, fighting game style.

I apologize if it seems i have insulted you or anything like that. Don't worry about it... it takes FAR more than that to offend me! If I was upset, I would not have closed with the word "Peace." Peace.

Tales Of Symphonia's movement in battle was very clunky, giving you only one plain of movement(which made for terrible circumstances when the camera/character was off). The Star Ocean games do MUCH better in this respect.
I like real time battle systems better because of its constant action that keeps players on their toes, although turn based is good too, but only if it can go fast, like OgreNix's DBS vid.

Most definetly FF7's battle system. The use of quick thinking and strategy has always amazed me.
