hey. it's been awhile...
so, uh, work used to be my main source of internet access, but everyone's been on edge lately due to this uncomfortable "downsizing" rumor that's been circulating... so, y'know, being the person with the least seniority, i'm trying to avoid doing anything that doesn't look exactly like work.
anyway. i've been looking forward to advent children since i first found out about it, but have avoided preordering for several reasons... primarily, because the nearest video game store is about forty minutes away, and i'm never sure when i'll get a chance to go. so, i called eb games on tuesday...
me: hey, did you get advent children in? them: did you preorder it? me: uh, no... are there any left for people who didn't? them: nope. me: well, when do you think you'll be getting more in? them: i don't think we're going to. me: oh... uh, okay. bye. them: bye.
well. that's pretty awful. originally, eb games told me that the only benefit of preordering (aside from being guaranteed a copy on the release date) is that it was the only way to get the bonus disc with special features. they also told me that it would retail for about thirty dollars, and that stores like wal-mart wouldn't likely be stocking it.
so, i went to wal-mart that night and got it for $19.95 (with the bonus disc). and i happened to be in the city yesterday, stopped into eb games and saw that they had plenty of them there, too. (for $19.95 as well, with the bonus disc.)
hmph. punks.

The bonus disc just pretty much only has english cast interviews and peeks in on there voice sessions. Not particularly amazing, but a nice little bonus. I got all 3 discs at the great price of 19.95!

i haven't purchased a copy for myself yet, but i since there's a topic on it, i have to say how much i love advent children. it's a perfect compliment and extention of ff 7.. the cg is incredible and it's a great movie experience. even more so for those who love ff 7 and spent countless hours playing, which makes it even better.

This is how you make a FF movie!! I got lost in the beautiful CG!! It was hard to tell if it was real or just CG(obviously CG) I only have the Jap vers. I hope to get the American Vers soon.

I got the 2 disc special edition as well. Advent Children is great stuff, although unfortunately the action was the main focus, as the story has more holes than the moon. But it was a night to remember, and the 2nd disc had some cool features on it too.

That's what I was wondering about. I know FF7, the game, suffered from a poor translation by Sony and, thus, left a lot of things quite vague. I'm quite sure it would've been much better if Square'd translated it instead (perhaps they may have focused on a theme).
So, thank you BK, sounds like I shall pass on this then. I've been thinking that the translation on this (like most Japanese to English things) would be pretty bad, and of course, everyone that's watched it is a huge FF7 fan (biasedness), so I wasn't sure if it'd be a good watch (I'd only feel good afterwards if the story was told/shown in a better way than the game).

I finally got this DVD. The best part was the FFVII summary video. I was lost when I watched the JP version last year because it had been so long since I'd played the game. With the summary I was at least able to relive some of the high points of the game and understand who all those characters were that kept showing up in the movie.
I don't think it's the English translation (which I thought was pretty good) I think that the movie does have a lot of holes and unless you've just played FFVII, a lot of the story elements are hard to understand.

Now that I think about it, some of the suprise plotpoints were explained, but the problem was that you had to remember ALL of FFVII, AND speculate on a lot of stuff for things to connect. For the most part though, you won't get a recap or explanatory flashbacks. The translation was alright, it wasn't terrible like the game's was, but the lip sync is obviously a little off.

i know i'll be given strange looks for saying this, but, i don't play rpg's for the story... that's why i'm glad advent children didn't bother with that part of it(filling in story gaps, plot holes, blah blah blah). i wanted to see cloud and everyone else move around like their cool character designs suggest.
i like body language more than actual spoken language sometimes..

warning: spoilers!
dont say you werent warned...
so am i the only one that thought this movie was complete crap? not only did it have tons of plotholes, was full of fanservice w/o point, and loaded w/ pointless action, it was inconsistent with the game! the reunion takes place every 7 years... so why are they meeting after just 2?

I believe we discussed in another thread that many of the so caller "plot holes" are due to the fact that you have to have just played FFVII or really know the story inside out to really understand what is going on here.
Do you really think they are going to wait seven years before looking for "mother?" That wouldn't really make any sense would it? It think the plan was to find her, gather an army and build their strength until it was time for the next reunion. Remember, most of the children are still young - and impressionable.
As for pointless action. It's an action movie, so of course there is going to be a lot of action. That's the whole point. If you're looking for a good plot and believable characters, invest your time in some good dramas.
Yes it could have been better and it was disappointing in many ways, but I really enjoyed watching it (and re-watching it). It's one of those movies you can just allow the action to wash over you without really paying attention to what's going on.

Well most of the action was pointless I'll admit, but the way they did it, I'd rather have that than some stupid storyline get in the way like The Spirits Within.

I was hoping it would clarify a lot of FF7's vague things/(maybe) loose ends. I'd even re-buy FF7 if Square did a translation/re-release of it.

If its the translation that bothers you Will, the PC version has a cleaned up translation. But you'd need to go out of your way to find that one.
