alotta poeple have posted what I was gonna say, so Ill post 2 extremely overlooked games
Baten Kaitos, easily gamecubes deepest game, the story, characters, battle system, and the music(oh god the music!) with all this together makes for an amazing game that everyone should try. (and it took me 70 hours to beat it!)
Ico, what can I say, I picked this up for 5$ at my local game store! and I havta say the best 5$ I spent in my life also turned out to be my favorite ps2 game ever! nuff said.

Hoshigami had some decent ideas, but they seem to have never test played it AT ALL, and tried to make it as frustratingly annoying/impossible/ monkeyassraperly-ness as possible. You HAVE TO strengthen up WAY WAY WAY WWWWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY too much before you can advance (even before the very first battle I had to, which is ridiculous, and after that you'd expect them to not get much harder/more frustrating, but they do, oh do they or what). The enemies are always either at your higher character's level or higher. The enemies always have the best equipment possible to obtain at that point (NOT best in shops, best you can obtain RARELY from extremely repetitive strengthening battling). The normal units you can recruit die in ONE or RARELY TWO hits from any enemy unit. The special characters are the only ones that can be of ANY use because they others die from ONE or RARELY TWO archer shots. I got through about 7 or 8 real battles (battles to advance forward) in about 23 hours of playing (no exagerating, I have the file still and it says that everytime I see it on the card). Everything is just really frustrating, and nothing even slightly resembles the foreign idea of fun. The story up to where I was was nothing special at all either. You can see in the first post in the best/worst rpgs topic that I put as my NUMBER ONE (tied with one other) WORST GAME OF ALL TIME. Disgaea is actually better than it, as is just about ANYTHING. I know, I wish there were more good strategy rpgs too, but it seems like they're something of the past.

im guess im a like hoshigami a little more than will, buthes not exaggerating. its quite the challenge. thats what i liked about it, i guess. outside of tactics ogre, there really arent that many challenging games out there. well, this one is. its definitely not made for the weak at heart. i liked it more than disgea. i just couldnt get into disgeas story line (did it even have one? ), and the battle system was nothing spectacular to me. i have phantom brave, but i havent had a chance to play it yet. anyways, there are tons of tactical games that no ones ever heard of on psone. i dont remember any of their names though. there was supposed to be a really hard tactical game come out some time ago on ps2, but i dont remember what it was. i just remember readin alot of review on it, and the increasingly complicated goals you would have to achieve. so yeah, anyways, im am somewhat fond of hoshigami, but i will say that its plot line isnt the best, but the gameplay is a little more addictive than disgea because its really hard. but dont try to play it for long periods. you may get so frustrated you break something.

I think I'll try and check out Hoshigami, without that high of expectations for it, but apparently I should just avoid Disgaea. It sounds like it's completely unanimous that that game SUCKS!
I'll keep my eyes open too, and inform you guys if I see any good tactical games. And in case anyone wasn't sure...PS1, PS2, and Computer games I'm looking for any good tacticals if they exist. (Post any though, as I'm sure there are other people looking for good games who have the other systems)
As for another series I forgot, not RPGs, but if you like action first-person shooters the Medal of Honor series is great.

Hey, DKoL. I'll help you find a site that has a free downloadable Tactical RPG. I'll be right back. Edit: Found it. It's a game called Hovendall Tactics. It has 10 missions or so, meaning it's a pretty short game. I hope you enjoy it. I'll provide a link to the actual site.

there is nothing in the rules that specifically says you cant, but i would rather you didnt. its kind of like direct linking. a linke to the main page is fine, so long as the game is legal. (i presume it is).

Haha That's a crazy game, the music and SFX are taken directly from FFT, FF3(US) and TO! Seems pretty cool, though.
*and the names are from those games too!*
